Have you A Literar Joined Society University of South Carolina Vol. XVI COLUMBIA, S. C., 13 1922. N( "N BLUE STOCKINGS TAKEN INTO CAMP P. C. Loses By a Small Score. Carolina-7, P. C.-4.. Yes, that's the way the score stood when the ref eree's whistle ended the battle on Da vis Field Saturday afternoon. And a battle it was from the moment "Rock" Snipes put his foot in the ball for the kickoff, until the aforementioned whis tic gave forth its shrill otes. There i were thrills aplenty, and many a time < during the afternoon the fans were I brought to their, feet by a spectacularly I completed pass or a fleet dash around( an end for several yards. The light team from Clinton uncorkedi a braiid of play worthy of any college, aad it is no longer a mystery why or how they defeated the heavier David son team two weeks ago. They fought every minute of the struggle, and this < same fight enabled then to carry the I ball within striking distance of Caro- i lina's goal line before they were stop- I ped by the warriors in Garnet and Black. Again, this fight is going to make the P. C. team a factor to he reckoned with in the race for the state championship this year. and several other teams in the state are going to have a stiff propo sition to face when they encounter the Presbyterians. But nw we must remember that there was another team out there fight- t ing too, and this team was the grand old machine of the Gamecocks. The Garnet and Black of Carolina was well defended on last Saturday afternoon, and the memory of tlt game will liii ger long in the minds of Carolina's sup porters. It will be hard to forget how "Rock" Snipes drove through the Blue Stockings' line for consistent gains, and how Bill Holland, Sizemore, and j. ). Parler performed likewise, and last but far from least how "Racehorse" Amlbs skirted those ends for yards at a clip. "Rocky" got away to a had start at first but came back strong in tile third period when the Gamecocks made their tritumphal march down the field to a touchdown. Bill Holland was a can non)I ball oil the offense and a stone wall on the defense. Frankie Meyer was t right on the job as usual on the right wing of the line. Then there was Jo Wheeler-but pshaw, we might as well say the whole eleven of thei played first class hall throughout-fior theyi surely did. By the way, did yon notice that "',al,a" Chappelle is still able to heat the einls downii on punt, and drop I the man with tile ball in his tracks almost. The feature playing for the Il1e I Stockings was contribute'd by Mlasotn at I Ieft end. and 'earce all( Wilson in the hackfield. On Friday evening, October 6th, the :hurches of Columbia entertained the tuidents of the University at five in- r frmal receptions held in various s hurches throughout the city. The af- i fairs were all decided successes, and t reatly enjoyed by the students attend- z ng them. The inclemency of hte weath- t -r probably kept a timid few away, but < here was crowd enough at each church o have a jolly good time. The stu- c lents not only had a good time at the u 'eceptions but they made friends who vill aid them in allying themselves t loser with the churches of the city. t The Presbyterians and Associate Re ormed P'resbytel ian students were en ertained at thhc Smith Memorial Chapel if the First Presbyterian church; the laptists at the Sunday school rooms of he First laptist church. the l'pisco >alians at Satterlee hall, and the Mleth >lists at Washington Street church and F Ulain Street church. Interesting pro- t trams were carried out at all five r -hurches. and the students attending , vish that such events would come often- c r. especially if the fair inhabitants of C. and Chicora would always be on1 land to help entertain. We of the University are glad to see hat the churches of the city are inter- a 'sted in us and mr welfare. Tomorrow our gridiron warriors in ,ade the land of the Tarheels and will iake an effort to avenge themselvcs for undry indignities suffereI at their hands ii times past. It will lie rmebmered hat last vear the Gamecocks had Fet er's men backed off the map and a auchdown to the had until the last uarter when a passing attack with some pod work by Lowe and Johnston vened the count in the last few min tes of the game. This was tragic. but it was one of lie two touchdowns chalked up agaitist lie Garnet and Black last season, and a we must give "credit to whom credit Sduie" and simply hope that no such ntoward accident will snatch a victory ron us this year. The game should be a corker, from very standpoint. Both elevens stand igh in the ranking of Southern foot all teams, and should be very nearly in >p form for this game. There is rival y of long standing between the two cmils, vitthusiasin runs high when ver they meet on the gridiron. In letger the Gamecock has one of the est coaches in the country, while I,tz r is the sort of a man who works his layers hard and has the force of char eter that enables him to get the very est oit of them at all times. He is a reat coach, not only of football, but of asketball and baseball as well. The South Carolina teams have been nproving steadily with each year (f letzger's leadership and wve have a fine lance to grah the gane from the Tar eels tomorrow.
