The Student-Body at the Foot ball Games. "Get behind the team this year with all the pep you have. Get the old Gamecock spirit and put it in the play ers." Sol Metzger has the foregoing to say. Now, fellows, I do not wish to complain so early in the year about the Carolina cheering squad etc., because I do not know of the arrangements that have been made for the forth coming games, but I would like to raise my voice and give a few words of ad vice. Friday night you heard Billy Doar say, "The Citadel is known all over the state at a College that gives its ath letic teams the best backing possible." I agree with him and guess you will have to do the same, but you who have seen the Citadel cheering squad in ac tion, know the reason. It is easily ex plained. At the Citadel, the entire student body is compelled to sit in a mass, in the middle section of the bleechers, with outsiders in different sections. Here at Carolina, we have no way to compel a student to sit in a particular place, but every one of us have enough college spirit to want to do so. Last year there was no section of the bleechers reserved wholly for students. We had to sit at the first place we could find seats. As a result the students were scattered all over the field and consequently there was a poor exhibition of cheering. Now, Mr. Manager, and others in charge of the football field, I beseech you to remedy this existing evil, by re serving at least five sections of the bleechers, in the middle of the playing field, for the student body. This can easily be done by roping aforesaid sec tions off and having Freshmen posted to keep other than students of the University off. If a section is reserved wholly for students, the student body of the Uni versity of South Carolin will more than willingly carry its share of the burden, and will be right behind our team from start to finish. Saturday afternoon in Melton Hall, the Hypatian Society held a reception for the Co-eds, opening what promises to be the most successful society year we have ever experienced.. The "Van ity Box" was all dressed up in fall flowers, the predominant colors being those of the society, gold' and white. About sixty co-eds were present and we were delighted to have as honor guests Dr. and Mrs. "Billy" Melton, and Mrs. G. A. Wauchope. The program began with the singing of our Alma Mater, after which Mrs. Vauchope gave an inspiring talk on the "History and purpose of the Hypathian Society." This address was followed by two musical numbers, a cornet solo by Mr. Bookhart and a piano solo by Miss McAlistcr.. A short talk by Dr. Melton in his usual delightful manner, concluded the formalities. Ice-cream and cakes were served, and everybody met everybody and talked to their hearts' content-thereby proving the appropriateness of one of the names for our home, the "Tower of Babel" (or is it "Babble?") V. E. C. -oo Y. W. Entertains. The Co-ed festivities of the season were continued on Monday afternoon by a social meetig of the Y. W. C. A. Fach "old girl" was expected to bring along several "prospects" and the fact that they did their Outy was proven by the large number in attendance. The program was brief and infor mal, consisting only of the singing of some Y. W. songs, a short talk by the vice-president on the "Purpose of the Y. W. C. A." and a talk by Dr. Mel ton which was the feature of the after noon. Dr. Melton took as his subject "The Rule of Life," saying that not only the Golden Rule and the Ten commad ments should constitute our mode of living, but the great rule was to fol low the teaching of Jesus Christ. After this a clever system of match ing provided partners for the social hour which .ollowed. There was sonic small talk of a Halloween party to be given by the Y. \V. so the "Eds" of this campus would be doing well to watch their step if they want to get invited. V. E. C.
