Gaines, spoke on the "Survival
of the Fittest." It was a very
interesting and thought pro
voking speech.
Mr. W. B. Harvey in his in
augural address outlined the
society's activities for the en
suing term.
The subject for debate was
Resolved: That the Cotton Ex
change be abolished.
Affirmative: J. A. Cave, B.
M. Crosby.
Negative: H. R. Hiankins,
WUyman Williams.
Judges decided in favor of
the negative.
The impromptu debate fur
nished much fun ; the subject
was, Resolved: That a course in
love should be given at Caro
lina.

HYPATIAN SOCIETY.
The Hypatian Literary Soci
ety held its first regular meet
ing since exams Saturday, Feb
ruary 11, in the Euphradian
Hall. After the roll call and
minutes of the last meeting the
following program was carried
out:
Debate, Resolved: That Edi
son is the greatest living Amer
ican inventor. The affirmative
was upheld by Misses Emily
Bookhart and Hendry, while the
negative was supported by
Misses Graydon and Beasley.
During the decision of the
judges the question was thrown
open to the house and many in
teresting points were )rollght
up by other members of the So
ciety. The queries for debates
for the entire term have been
posted by the critic and it is
hoped that all the members
will look over these queries be
fore the meetings and be able
to enter into these open dis
cussions. The judges decided
in favor of the affirmative.
Quite a bit of interest has
been manifested by members of
the society in choosing a pin
for the Hypatians; the Society
has never before adopted a

but at the request of the hostess
