College Songs.
College songs, like songs in the
outside world, run the entire
gamut of human emotions. We
have the song of unrestrained
joy, jazzy and full of pep; we
have the almost "sicred" official
song. They are all different and
are to be used oi different occas
ions.
Nobody w%olld think of singing
the "B1lues" in (hlirch, and vice
versa no band woild play ia sacred
hymn at ia dance. There is i pur
pose for each type of musical
sentiment and discrimination
iist be exercised.

and songs are being jumbled to
gether into a potpo-rri that
knows neither feeling nor tradi
tion. Songs that send a thrill
down our backs and tears into
ourl- eyes are thrown slipshod into
our "pep" programs with blood-,
curdling and nerve-racking yells.
The most conspicioius example of
this is the u1nconltrolled hulrsting
into song, if such it cInl be called,
of our1 ''We Ilail Thee, Caroi lil"
O aIy aIld everv occaion. Our
most beloved song is being treated
like popular jazzy music, to be
whistled and sling everywhere
and anytime.
From our observation it ap
pears that at football games "We
IIa il Thee, Ca rol i na" is used as
a filler whenever yells canillot be
recalled or do not come to mind
immediately. Why all this?
"W I Hail T Che, Carolina"
should not be sulig indiscrimil
itely and be allowed to sink to
the level of ordinary yells. Peo
ple do not go aroind singing "The
Star Spangled Banner" except
on specific occasions. So wh'
not use a little reserve with oiii
