STUDENTS ENJOY COLLEGE NIGHT Freshmen Introduced to College Activities. Excellent Speeches Made College Night was held in the University Chapel on Friday nliglt. September 23. under the direction of the Y. M. C. A. Pep in all of its fifty-seven varieties was displayed anti the new men were introduced to all the various forms of college activities. Harry M. Lightsey, president of the "Y," presided, and after a few introductory remarks intro dluced Dr. W. S. Currell. I)r. Currell stressed the advan tages to he derived from the lit erary societies, the University publications. the Y. M. C. A., and athletics. "And don't be a knock er," he concluded, "be a booster." IIon. Christie Benet, represent ing the alumnlni. told of the in terest of the alumni in the stud ents. The activities of the stud ent body reflects the activities of every individual student. Char acter, not appearance, is the strength of the individual. Then followed a song by the students, after which Harris Thomas and II. M. Lightsey, speaking for the Euphradian and Clariosophic Literary Societies respectively, urged all new men to identify themselves with either of the literary societies. The Ilypathian Society was represented by Miss Fletcher Stackhouse. W. 0. Goodwin spoke for the Law Association. Dr. Reed Smith, representing the faculty, said that college spirit can somehow be incredibly modified from year to year. It is not a dead thing but a living thing capable of being advanced or marred, depending on the students themselves. The gymnasium llnder the di rection of Mr. VanMetre pre sentedi a sparring exhibition be tween "Red" Thompson an( "Larry" McLain. Neither of the men were in tip top condition but they finished up three rounds of excellent boxing in fine style and the audience was delighted. Miss Dorothy Vaughn, speak ing for the Co-ed Association, brought lown cheers when she said that the co-eds stood loyally behind the boys in their athletic endeavors. W. J. Gaines spoke for the thlree studenCft p)ublications, Tile Gamecock, The Carolinian and tile Garnet and Black. A play "was next presented which mighmt be entitled "The Burnt Horse Flesh," featuring Mr'. Bell, the "Y" Secretary, andl George Sawyer. Ralph Ramsey spoke for the Y. M. C. A. and Hleyward Brocking ton for the Honor System. A short stunt was presented by the Y. W. C. A. Next "Wop" McGowan and1 Sol Metzger wvere called upon. Both were met with cheers. They pre senlted the football prospects and1 the need of the team for support. 0. C. Blackinon thenceforth held sway and a pep meeting held. FIRST Y. M. C. A. MEETING The University Y. M. C. A. held the first of its regular Wed esdnay night meetings last week with a fairly large attendance. A short business meeting was held at which new men who had signed pledge cards were admitted as regular members of the "Y." Iiarry M. Lightsey. Fant Kelly, and Ralph Ramsey were elected to serve on the Board of )i rectors. The regular )rogr"al 1 was openled by a vocal solo by Mr. Maurice Matteson. a singer of well-known ability. 11 is selection was thoroly enjoyed. Dr. R. S. Triiesdale, of the Main Street Methodist Church. wis introduced and made a most inspiring talk on "What Ilave You Committed Yourself To?" All are coumitted to something. Many men in early college career commit themselves to evil com panions. The "Y" endeavors to start men off right, to get them committed to that which is worth while. Those who have con mitted themselves to false stanl arls, he said, should qpiit them. Dr. Truesdale concluded his splendid address by urging all nmenl to commit themselves to the deeps of life and not to the shal lows and ooze of sin. The Y. M. C. A. has made anl excellent begilnning in its opening Wed:Iesday night meeting and we are assured that more good speakers will be heard each week.
