A BEGINS YEAR'S WORK At a Council meeting held the first Monday night before school was opened the University Y. M. C. A. made extensive plans for making this year the greatest year that Carolina has ever had in the way of "Y'' work. As to the realization of those plans the activities of the "Y" already this year point to a great year for them. College night, The Fresh man Hanquet, and the Freshman Reception were all great succes ses and far surpassed like occa sions for former years. The members of the Freshman class were given a Banquet at the City Y. M. C. A. on Tuesday night. Some 90 odd members of the Freshman class were present for the feed and they regaled themselves on eats and with in tellectual food in the shape of speeches by sonic of the noted men around Carolina. Dr. Shayer made the speech of the evenmg ur ging the young men for strong clean living. Ile was followed with able speeches by McBride Dabe, a former President of the Y. M. C. A., Mr. Carpenter, the new chaplain, Alex Waite of foot ball renown who is the chairman of the Freshman conmnittee of the Y., and by 11. G. Bell, secre tary of the University Y. M. C. A. Norman Hiuckabee was present and with contortions, bello'ings, and other antics keep the crowd in a state of pertubation. The co eds served the meals and some of the Freshmen were so enamored that they forgot to eat. One was observed eating the rind of the grapefruit while another tried to partake of the cut flowers set in front of himi, having possibly heard of celery some where in that remote district from which he journeyed to Carolina. No, they are not green. But, eats notwithstanding, tak ing all possible attractions and detractions in consideration, after all is said and done-the climax of the work done to make the Freshmen realize they had come to the best college in the state, was the soiree given by the Fresh 1:Ien class Friday night. '1hie de lectable part of which was of course the young femmes from Columbia and Chicora, not to mention the beauteous part of our own campus. Time alone can tell what hearts were set afname with the cupidhs (hart at this reception and( what pain and joy will nec es.sarily followv. In time to come some men will thank the UJniver sity Y. M. C. A. from the bottom of their hearts for having made their lives complete, while others ! Tho sad to tell some fel lows just couIld not talk and had to pass the time away by suggest ig frequent and r'epeated trips to time plunch bowl. In times past we have heardl of punch that would loosen the tongue-but this was Y. M. C. A. punch at the re. ception. Thlings have settled dlown to the regular routinie now and1( thme reg ulhar activities of the Y. M. C. A. -the Wednesday nuight meetings and the Friday night Bible Clnae will begin this week.
