PRESENT GOOD DEBATE Manning Debating Cup Will be Held by Winners for One Year Under Rules Laid Down by Debating League Several Years Ago. In the final high school debate held at the University last week as a part of the high school meet fostered by the Unive-sity Ex tension Department, Rock Hill's affirmative team won th edeci sion over the team from Gaffney high school by a unanimous vote. The query was, "Resolved, That the United States should enter into the League of Nations." The judges were: J. N. Frierson, E. M. Rucker, F. W. Bradley and L. T. Baker, of the University Faculty, and Mr. W. W. Ball, of The State newspaper. The victorious team represent ing the Rock Hill school was composed of Miss Elizabeth Scrugg.- and Julian Starr, who presented their argument in a very effective manner and pleased their audience with the way in which they handled the debate. Twelve teams, representing six schools, all of which had sur vived the State-wide elimination contests, were brought to the University last week for the finals. This year the contests were all above the average high school debate and indicated the progress that was being made in the high schools in debating. The six schools represented in the debate at the University were: Rock Hill, Gaffney, Hyatt Park, Cedar Springs, Newberrv, and Pinewood. The query for dlebate next year will be somne phase of the capital and labor quest ion, prob)ably fh at of the open or clo;sed shop. A usual, the University will pub) lish from time to time buLlletins n con nection with the sub)jects dlebated, which should prIove to be of material benefit to high school contestants. Professor HI. C. D)avis, of the D)epartment ot English, who has charge of the publication of these bulletins, says they will probably be ready for distribution by next Septem b)er, which will give the high schools ample time to work up their debates and hold their elimination contests. RRTTfR HUGH CHOOL HIGH SCHOOL DEBATES FOR '22 BEING PLANNED University Extension Depart ment is Taking Steps to Make Annual Meet Greater Success. SCHOOLS INTERESTED. High School League to Broaden Its Activities and Hopes to Make "High School Week" of 1922 Greatest Ever in History Organization. Plans are already being con sidered for the high school meet t" next year and it is expected that it will be even greater sue cess than the one .just over. More schools are expected to ,join the High School League, thus enabling it to extend its activities and increase its scope of eili i:ency. This year there were forty sc.hools participating in the oratorical and athletic events. Next year all important high schools of the State will be re :eive(d on application. Schools thruout the State are becoming enthusiastic over the efforte being made by the Uni versity Extension D)epartment to promote their work and to in crease their efficiency. The Uni versity has realized long aga thAt as the capstone of the educa tional system of t he State its campus must not be con fined to Columbia. T hat the tJni ver"s:ty has succeeded won(ler fully in this capacity may b, see - very readily from the progress that has been made by the high schools of the State since the be ginning of the work of the Ex tension Department. Chandler, of Sumter high school, piled up a total of fifteen points in the track meet at the University last week. As a reward for his efforts he was given the Reach-McMaster cup, having headed the list of 40 schools by securing 18 points. Two high school records were broken during the meet, the 44(0 yard dash being lowered by three-fifths of a second by (handler. Miller, of Greenville "lli," clipped off one-fifth of a secon1 from the 120 yards hur dIes mark. The Remch-M1lcMaster tropry cup was presented Chandler for h[s individtua! work, and the llough cup was given Sumter sch' i fcr h"iving w\,on the meet. Gold m1edals were also awarded all w.ers of tirst place and bronze medals were given the holders of second place. In addition to the breaking of two speed records the general performance of the high school athletics was far above the aver age, even in spit of the fact that an adverse wind handicapped the contestants somewhat.
