"Sell most of it."

replied the farmer. "Won't you

LOVELY SCENE.
We stood at the bars as the sun

Beneath the hills on a summer
day.
Her eyes were big, and tender,
and brown,
Her breath as sweet as the new

Far from the west the faint sun
shine
Glanced sparkling off her golden
hair,
Those calm deep eyes were turn

And a look of contentment rested
there.
I see her bathed in the sunlight

I see her standing peacefully
now.
Peacefully standing and chewing
her cud,
As I rubbed her ears-that Jer

CAN YOU ANSWER?
Where can a man find a cap for
his knee?
Or a key to the lock of his hair?
Can his eyes be called an acad
emy,
Because there are pupils there ?
What gems are found in the
crown of his head ?
Who travels the bridge of his
nose?
Can he use, when shingling the
roof of his house,
The nail on the end of his toes?
Can the crook of his elbow be
sent to jail?
If so, what did it do?
How d o e s he sharpen his
shoulder blades?
I'll be hanged if I know, do you?
Can he sit in the shade of the
palm of his hand ?
Or beat the drum of his ear?
Do the calves of his legs eat the
corns on his toes?
If so, why not grow corn on the
ears? .-Ex.

"An X in Time-"
We sat intertwined in a big
porch-chair
Like the vines which surrounded
us there
And her cheek flushed red
As I softly said,
"How old are you, Maiden
Fair?"
She laid her little hand in mine
And over her face came a smile
divine.
"My father," she said
With a toss of her head
"Has a custom which I think
fine."
"When each passing year of my
life has flown
He gives me a dollar bill all my
own.
I have just sixteen
And if you're very keen
You'll find out how old I have
grown."
But her father, bursting upon
the scene,
Blasted my love for the dear lit
tle queen
For her reached in his coat
And brought out a crisp
note
"Here's the ten-spot I owe you,
Francine !"

Suddenly the mother leapt to

Paradise.
Georges gazed up at the stars
and was happy. The little twink
ling, glittering, revolving points
of light seemed truly to "sing
sweetly in their orbits" and the
music, mingled with the silvery
flashing of a far-auay stream
filled his ears and thrilled his
soul. The air was heavy with
some strange sweet incense. It
seemed to Georges that he was in
heaven. Never before had he
felt such emotion as had been
aroused in him that night by the
one at his side. He felt a beau
tiful serene joy and smiled hap
pily as he listened to the celes
tial music. The little stars them
selves seemed to laugh and wink
at Georges and the one by his
side as if they were saying:
"What more do you want?"
