SOCIETIES. Euphradian. The meeting of the Euphra dian Society on February 25th was marked. by the splendid spirit shown by the debaters. Mr. Jeffries made an extempo raneous speech on "The Value of the Ability to Speak in Pub lic." Mr. Jeffries, as is his cus tom, made a good talk. Mr. Douglas was the Declaimer of the evening and did well. Mr. Greever followed with a spirit ed oration on "Morale." The subJect for debate was, "Resolved, That Congress should make additional appro priations for the enforcement of Prohibition." The affirma tive was debated by Messrs. S. H. Jones' and Leppard; while Messrs. Hawkins and S. A. Black upheld the negative. The debate was good. Mr. Haw kins appearing for the first time as a debater no the society floor, did himself more than justice. The following program has been - adopted for the next meeting on March 4th: Current Eveits, William Joyner; De clamation, T. P. Taylor and Hutto, Subject for extemporan eous speech, "Baseball Pros pects for 1921." Weekly Ora tor, E. M. Black. The subject for debates: "Resolved, That an ugly woman with a beautiful voice is more desirable as a wife than a beautiful woman with a harsh voice."' Affirma tive, Refo, S. A. Black, Nega tive, B. F. Parker and D. J. Jen kins. CLARIOSOPHIC. The Clariosophic Society convened at its regular hour on last Friday night. Due to the fact that the Classical Associa tion was in session at the Uni versity and several instructive lectures were to be given in chapel by prominent members, the society voted to take a re cess after the transaction of important business until the following Friday night. After the business on hand was disposed of the society ad journed to allow members to go to the chapel to hear mem bers of the Association lecture. Hypatian. The Hypatian Literary So ciety held its regular meeting Friday, February 25 th in the Euphradian Society hail. This was the first meeting to be held in the hall, which the Euphra dian Society has kindly offered .to the Hypatian Society. The subject for the day's program was Rupert Brooke. Miss Shirley Black read an interest ing paper on "The Life and Works of Rupert Brooke," and Miss Frances Wannamaker gave several readings from the poems of Rupert Brooke. Af ter some important business was discussed, the society ad journed. REVIVAL SERVICES FOR UNIVERSITY. Dr. Robert G. Lee, pastor of the First Baptist church at Edgefield, arrived in 'Columbia last Tuesday to conduct a three day revival at, the University under the auspices of the Uni versity Young Men's Christian Association. Dr. Lee is a graduate of Fur man University, continuing his studies at' Tulane' University' and at the -University of Chi cago. Dr. Lee holds the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from this last named .institution. Special prayer meetings have been held at the Univer sity every .night for a week in the various dormitories pre paratory for the coming revi val. Indications are that the meeting will be a decided suc cess, and it is hoped that every student will avail himself of this opportunity to hear Dr. Lee. Students have supporteda the "Y" 've-y loyally at Caro lina, and much interest is being manifested in the revival now being held. BIG TRIANGLE PRELIMINARY HELD. In the preliminary held on last Friday night to determine the debaters for the Florida Carolina-Tennessee contests, E. B. Smith and W. C. Mann were chosen to compose the affirma tive team, while G. H. Witt kowsky and Parker will up hold the negative. The main debate will be held on Friday nigth, March 18th. Carolina's negative team will meet Ten nessee's affirmative at Gaines ville, Fla., and the' University affirmative will meet Florida's negative at Knoxville, Tenn. Tennessee and Florida will meet at Columbia. STATE ORATORICAL PRELIMINARIES SOON.
