, "IT HAS BEEN SAID."
Says Russell:
You don't know
How much you have to know
In order to know
1,How little you know.
One difference between the
Democratic party and the
Clemson Tigers, is that the
Democrats have a chance to
win within the next four years.
Speaking of the proficiency
of women, "it takes nine tailors
to make a man" but often have
we known just one charming
little damsel to do the jo.b ex
ceedingly well, thank you.
When you see a man stroll
ing around the campus talking
to himself, one of two things is
certain:
Either
She wouldn't listen,
Or
She listened and then laughed.
After hearing some men's
reasons for not succeeding in
life, about the only conclusion
we can draw is that,
They are
What they are
Because
They are not
What they would have been
If
They had not have been
What they are.
We'll have to hand it to our
"Cheer-leader" for his ability
to make cheering a force of
habit. After the. Carolina
Clemson game one Carolina
Freshman concluded his even
ing prayer by saying,
"God bless ma;
God bless pa;
God bless everybody,
BOOM!!! RAH!! RAH!
If a man gets what he wants,
If he knows what he wants,
Then he wants it
Then, does
All the world love a lover,
Because,
Lovers love to be loved?

HARK!!
List to this ,you hopeful man
With aspirations to
Win the heart of some pure
woman,
Who looks with scorn on you:
Be ever near, her wish to do;
And always be sincere,
For remember, she's a woman
true,
Or else you wouldn't care.
You may tell her she is clever,
And pretty, and all that;
And that you'd gladly die for
her,
Or kill a pesky rat.
But such role's folly to pursue,
For women all are vain,
And likely, she will look on you
With all the more disdain.
Of course, your words may be
sincere,
And you, would doubtless act
To help your charming little
dear;
But why not use some tact ?
If you don't, she'll either think
of you
As a very fluent liar
Or, what would be worse for you,
She'd sniff the air some
higher.
So, be tactful, for that's the
game
You must pursue to win
The one you want to bear your
name
And share with you your bin.

R. 0. T. C. NEWS.
The R. O. T. C. held the cen
ter of the stage last Saturday
afternoon, the organization put
ting across three events in rapid
succession.
Two R. O. T. C. elevens, com
posed of Freshmen and Sopho
mores, played a very creditable
game of football, the former
winning by the score of 7 to 0.
Both teams did some good run
ning with the ball. Myers was
the individual star of the game,
taking the ball across for the
only touchdown made and play
ing an excellent game thruout
the oontest.
A formal guard mounting fol
lowed immediately after the
game. This was pulled off in
fine style considering the short
time the cadets have had to pre
pare for it. A great deal of
credit is due Major Duvall for
the showing made by the men
under his instruction.
The third event of the even
ing was a dance. A large num
ber of feet artists attended this,
including about fifty charming
co-eds. The dance ended a very
enjoyable evening of R. O. T. C.
activities.
Beginning Saturday, the R.
O. T. C. will give a dance every
Saturday evening from 5 p. m.
to 7 p. m. These dances will
be open to all students of the
University and members of the
faculty.

ow Large is an Atom?
A TOMS are so inninitcsimul that to be seen under
the most power ful microscope one hundred
m million must be grouped. The atom used to be the
- sallest indivisible unit of matter. When the X-Rays
ad radium were discovered physicists found that they
wvere dealing with smaller things than atoms--with par
ticles they call "electrons."
Atoms are built tup of electrons, just as the solar
system is built up of sun and planets. Magnify the
hydrogen atom, says Sir Oliver Lodge, to the size of a
cathedral, and an electron, in comparison, will be no
bigger than a bird-shot.
Not much substantial progress can be made in chemical and
electrical industries unless the action of electrons is studied. For
that reason the chemists and physicists in the Research Labora
tories of the General Electric Company are as much concerned
with the very const itut ion of mat ter as t hey are wit h the develop
ment of new inventions. They usc the X-Ray tube as if it were
a machine-gun; for by its Laceans electrons are shot at targets in'
new ways so as to reveal more about the struct ure of nwitter.
As the result of such experiments, the X-Ray tube has been
radi communication, ha beec developed Int o aind ofenriger
device for guiding electrons by radio waves. -
Years may thus be spent in what seems to be merely a purely
"tbeoretical" investigatidn. Yet nothing is so practical as a
good theory. The whole structure of modern mechanical engi
neering is reared on Newton's laws of gravitation and motion
theories stated in the form of immutable propositions. ''
In the past the theories that resulted from purely scientific re
search usually came from the university laboratories, whereupon
the imdustries applied them. The Research Laboratories of the
General Electric Company conceive it as part of their task to ex
plore the unknown in the same spirit, evems though there may be
no immediate commercial goal in view. Sooner or later the
world profits by such research in pure science. Wireless com
munication, for example, was accomplished largely as the result
ofHrz's brillian serie ofprely scientific experiments demon.
