UNIVERSITY MECCA OF SCHOOL WORLD Atihletes and Orators Come for Annual Meet. TROPHY CUPS OFFERED Over 200 High School Boys and Girls Will Compete for State Honors. The University of South Caro lina will be the Mecca of the state high school world April 21, 22 and 23 when over 200. high school students from all over the state will gather in Columbia to contest for honors in track, tie - '.nation :n debate. The track ..- - 1 n.l otion c:m wMt,. al, open only to boys, the debate be ing open to both boys and girls and a special contest in expres sion for girls only. The track and boys' declama toin contests are well established having been held annually since 1910. The girls expression was addded in 1918. The debate, the final contest in the South Caro lina High School Debating league was inaugurated in 1917. "The preliminary contests in oratory will be held Thursday afternoon, April 2, in the class rooms- and society halls of the university, all contestants being required to meet at Flynn hal! by 3:30 o'clock Thursday after noon for assignment to speaking squad and set of judges. The two best speakers from each squad will be selected to contest for the state honors in the un versity chapel rhureday night. "The preliminaries in the track meet will be held Friday morning on the university field, the finals to be run off in the af ternoon. All contestants must have numbers assigned by the secretary Friday morning before entering the preliminaries. "Three gold medals are given foi first and second and third places in oratory and ten gold and ten bronze medals for first and second plac.s in tra.t events. The schooi winnii;g first in oratory holds the Wiespape trophy cup for one year. The school winning the highest num ber of points in track is awarded a trophy cup by Sylvan Bros., of Columbia. The individual in the meet winning the greatest num ber of points is awarded the Reach-McMaster trophy cup with his name inscribed upon it. This is held for one year." Robert M. Kennedy, librarian of the University, has been ap pointed South Carolina State di rector for the "Books for Every body" movement of the Ameri can Library Association. With the active cooperation of librarians, library trustees and friends of libraries, Mr. Ken nedy will enlist the support of the entire State for the project of extending public library serv ice into every community in the country and every branch of na tional activity. Establishment of new libraries will be promo ted and existing public libraries everywhere will be assisted to develop vigorous measures for reaching all classes in their re spective communities and to meet their full possibilities as agents for the promotion of sound American citizenship.
