Collegians Turn in Well Played Contest, While Losers Also Do Good Work. Carolina defeated Camp Jack son on Carolina field Thursday afternoon by the score of 4 to 3. By some pretty baseball the col legians scored in the first and third and added another in the fifth with the assistance of an error. Blount held the soldiers scoreless during his five rounds. Wallace went to the mound in the sixth and finished the game. He made a couple of costly er rors in the sixth and gave up a triple and double, all of which netted three runs. He kept out of 'trouble in the last three rounds, however. Morrison re lieved Smith in the sixth and pitched shut out ball until the ninth, when a hit,a stolen base, an error and a wild pitch sent Richards across the plate with the winning run after two men had been retired. The work of Gullick and Jarrett for Cai Jackson was of a high order. Every man ,i the Gamecock in field figured in feature plays while Seaborn's pegging w: deadly. CAROLINA. ENTERS RIFLE CONTEST Competes With Georgia Tech. and Wofford The R. 0. T. C. has begun rifle practice, Captain Duvall of fering three valuable prizes to the three best marksmen in the battalion preliminaries coming off May the 10th and 15th. April the 17th the R. 0. T. C. com petes in a triangular 22 cali bre rifle competition contest with the Georgia School of Technology and Wofford. The R. 0. T. C. has also entered in the Southeastern Department competition in which all schools and colleges in this district have entered teams for both gal lery and rifle competition which takes place May 14. The R. 0. T. C. has already entered six men on the list to go to Camp Benning, Ga., which is the record R. 0. T. C. camp. Camp Benning is an ideal place for this camp, being located in the mountains and convenient ly near Columbus, Ga. This is the largest camp in the United States and is the infantry train ing school for machine guns, au tomatic rifle firing, tanks, and all activities in infantry. In this place may be seen the firing of all these weapons under every conceivable action of warfare. For recreation it has been plan ned for the R. 0. T. C. to have weekly dances and girls from Columbus, Ga., will be brought up in government trucks for these dances. The athlete who is interested in baseball will find competition between various units. Rifle practice will be one of the main features of instruc tion ; there will be no studies. The government furnishes all uniforms, pays traveling expen ses and gives a ration allowance which is the same as that of the West Point cadet. The R. 0. T. Umnire Brazie EDUCATORS MEET WITH UNIVERSITY Economic Conference to BE Held Saturday. The United States Bureau of Education will hold a conference on business training and com mercial education at the Uni versity on Saturday, the meet ing to be attended by delegates from five Southern States. The increasing demand of business for a larger supply of students and graduates of schools and colleges trained in vocational and higher technical subjects has presented to the educators of the country prob. lems which are to be considere'i in the conference, which is ex. pected to be attended b ,all ad ministrative teachers of all sub jccts taught in relation t. busi ness and commerce. The thrc" most important problens to he discussed in detfi and foi w.ie' the conference will seek a prac tical solution are: Commercial teacher training college entrance credits in commercial branches and vocational commercial sub jects in relation to general train ing and regional or local de mands of business for students trained in vocational and pro fessional commercial subjects. Three sessions of the confer ence will be held, morning, after noon and night, beginning at 10. 2 and 8 o'clock, respectively, each cession to be devoted to th~~dis cussion of one of the three prob lero as they relate to the South ern region. The bureau of e'la cation will be represented at !he conference by Dr. Glen Levin Swiggett, in charge of commer cial education for the bureau. The state department of educa tion, the city schools and the uni versity are co-operating to make the conference one of the most interesting and productive of the series of similar conferences now being held thruout the country. States to be represented in the convention are: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Geor gia and Florida. Further de tails are expected from the bureau of education in the next few days. FAMOUS SOL METZGER WILL COACH CAROLINA One of Best Known Coaches in Country Coming Here. FIVE-YEAR CONTRACT BE GINS NEXT SEASON. Former University of Pennsyl vania Star Player and Coach Has Directed Work of Championship Teams. Sol Metzger will coach Caro lina football teams for the next five years. This announcement has just been made by the Alum ni Athletic Association, a re cently organized association pro posing to put South Carolina football on the athletic map with a big "F." In signing Metzger a big step is made toward in stant prestige for he is one of the best known footbali men in the country. Long a successful Sol Metzger coach he has also made a repu tation as a writer on sports and his name is known wheiever football is followed which means just about every section of the United States. Mr. Metzger will take active charge of the next Carolina foot ball squad next fall. H% wa, recently the guest of honor at a big get together gathering of alumni of Carolina held in Co lumbia when tremendous inter est was aroused in athletics in general and football in particular at the University.
