HIGH SCHOOL WEEK AT UNIVERSITY. To Be Greatest Event in the History of the High School League. The Extension Department of the University of South Car olina is expected to make High School Week this spring the greatest event of its kind ever held at an educational institu tion in the State of South Caro lina. Already eighty-four High Schools have registered for the Inter High School De bating Contest. This is an un precedent number, and speaks well for the interest in the va rious High School contests that will come off in April. In ad dition to the debate that will take place on Wednesday of High School Week, there will be- on Thursday the Oratorical and Declamation Contest, and on Friday the Track Meet. If proper accommodations can be arranged, it is the purpose of -3 the Extension Department, who has charge of the promotion of d High School Week, to bring six or seven hundred students to the university this year. The University of Florida had six hundred High School boys for the contests of their High School Week last year, and are planning to have several hun dred additional visitors this year. North Carolina, Vir ginia, Kentucky, each have great gatherings of High School students every spring at the University, and there are few things that are more bene ficial both to the university and the visitors than a well ar ranged and carefully managed gathering of this kind. It is hoped that the entire student body will cooperate in every way possible to make an un qualified success of this week. LAW SCHOOL. The most interesting trial of the season was held at the moot court last Thursday night. A splendid and interesting array of witnesses told various and conflicting stories. The State was represented by Messrs. Aiken, McEachin and Blackmon. The defen dant was represented by Messrs. Laughlin, McDonald and Levin. After brilliant pleas by all attorneys and a fair and impar tial charge by Mr. Blackwell, a member of the Columbia bar, and a graduate of the Law School, the jury retired. After debating about a half hour they reported they were unable to agree and a mistrial was or dered. MORE TENNIS COURTS FOR CAROLINA. Silver Loving iCups to Be Given to Winners in Spring Tournament. President W. S. Currell has taken a great deal of interest in the out-of-door athletic ac tivities of the university, and has granted permission to have seven new tennis courts. The seven courts, together with the two already in commission, will make it possible to organize a tennis club, with something like a hundred players for the spring ciontests in tennis. Mr. Van Meter, the Physical Direc tor, is going to offer two silver loving cups for the winners in doubles, a silver loving cup for the winner in singles and two silver loving cups for the win ners in mixed doubles. These contests will be played some time after the 15th of May, and it is confidently expected to at tract a great deal of interest am.ong the student body. There is already a good deal of interest in tennis, and by in creasing the courts from two to nine, a larger number of men who wanted to play, but have been unable on account of the lack of courts, can now be ac commodated. It is hoped that some of the tennis courts will be completed for the middle of March, and all of them by the first of April. EXCHANGES. Fan (late arrival, out of breath): "What's the score?"
