DR. CURRELL ADDRESSES ASSOCIATION MEETING President of University Gives In teresting Talk on 'House of H appiness" At the regular Wednesday night meeting of the Y. M. C. A. Dr. Currell gave an inspir ing address to a large audience, taking for his subject "The House of Happiness." "Happi ness," Dr. Currell said, "means joy that is within us. To ob tain a house of happiness the very first essential thing is to get rid of pride and recognize that all we have comes from God, and recognize Him as sovereign. Parlor comes from the French word porler, mean ing to speak. God wants us to be happy. Blessed are the peacemaker, for they shall be called the children of God. There must be a good self and a bad self. After we have been happy in the parlor next we come to the library. Blessed are the meek, for they shall in herit the earth. We go in the library to inherit wisdom of the earth. Next we arrive at the kitchen. Blessed are they that are persecuted, for right eousness sake, for their's is the kingdom of heaven. Why is the kitchen the place of strife? Out of the kitchen come the very things that gives us life. If a man goes through life and finds no obstacles, there is something wrong. We are con stantly coming in contact with them. Then at last we come to the dining room, Blessed are they that do hunger and thirst, for righteousness sake, for their's is the kingdom of heav en. We have all these which constitutes the important re quirements for a house of hap piness." NEW UNTIMED RECORD ESTABLISHED. "Big Boy" Gullick, com mander-in-chief of the "Arbor Day Work Forces," broke the world's record for the hundred yard dash Monday, it is be lieved. "The 'Big Chap' was standing behind a tree near the university printing office when a charge of dynamite blew up a stump in front of the Marshal's office. A piece of the stump was blown dangerously near Mr. Gullick's place of safety and the gentleman in white duck with a sudden dlecision made a hasty get-away. Manager Mann, of the track team, re grets that a stop watch was not brought to the scene to ascer tain the new record. LITERARY SOCIETIES. The Clariosophic Literary Society held its regular meet ing Saturday night, February 21st, and carried a very inter esting program in spite of the fact that Monday was a holi day and several of the boys had gone home for the week-end. The following was the literary program for the evening: Declaimers-Crouch, T. E., Hope, R. M. Current Events-Davis, J. M. Orator-Ackerman, W. E. Debate: Resolved, That the United States Government should adopt a budget system of finance. Afirmative-Kirkley, C. B., Ervin, S. D. Negative-McGowan, A. R., Wengrow, J. The query for the im prdmptu debate was: Resolved, That summer is a better time for making love than winter. This query was very ably up held on both sides by several' members, who gave their per sonal experiences along this line in summer and winter. The men to represent the Euphradian Literary Society in the finals of the State Oratori cal contest were selected at the regular meeting on Friday night last. The program was dispensed with and the whole time was given to to 0 speakers. J. B. Belk spoke on "Construc tive Statesmanship," D. J. Jen kins on "The New Age," L. C.I Johnson on "The Divinity ofi Discontent," and Morris Mar cus on "A Monument to Un known Heroes." The men de livered their speeches in the or der in which their names oc cur, all of which were forceful and brilliant, and the speakers deserve considerable praise for their efforts. Dr. Morse, Prof. McCutch eon and Prof. Rucker, acting as judges, selected Messrs. Belk, Jenkins and Johnson for the finals. A GLEE CLUB FOR CO-EDS. An invitation has been ex tended to the co-eds to join a choral club directed by Mrs. Bellaman and Mrs. Lucas. This meets every Thursday night at the Y. W. C. A. There was an important meeting of the Hypatian Liter ary Society Friday the 20th. Af movement was started to get more pep into the society. The first step is to get a new motto and then to live up to that mot to. Plans are on foot to get the society as fully recognized as the Euphradian or Clario sophic.
