GERMAN CLUB BEGINS SEASON OF DANCES Delightful Affair Given in Gymnasium The German Club gave, its first dance of the season last Thursday evening in the Uni versity gymnasium. Almost 250 persons were present, in cluding Citadel alumni and ca (lets, Carolina alumni and spon sors, a number of visiting girls from Charleston and else where, many Columbia girls and the members of the Ger man Club. The massive hall was dec orated with streamers of gar net and black and flags of all the allied nations. Portraits of Woodrow Wilson and Gen eral Pershing were hung around the walls, lending a pa triotic atmosphere to the occa sion. Lana Sims, president of the club, led the grand march with Miss Jane Kealhofer. Follow ing this the series of card dances was begun and con tinued until 1:30, with a short intermission about 12:30. The music was furnished by Hall's orchestra. Refreshing punch was served thruout the even ing. Sponsors of the Carolina team were the honor guests of the occasion. They were: Miss Helen Coles, of Jacksonville, Miss Margaret Pringle o' Charleston, Miss Olivia Wilson of Winston-Salem, Miss Mary Menafee of Kentucky, Miss Blanche Rowlette of Columbia and Miss Callie Mims Purvis of Columbia College. Only one of the Citadel sponsors made the trip to Columbia, Miss Mar ion Robertson, yet she was ac cempanied by several other at tractive Charleston girls. The opening dance of the German Club is usually given during the last week in Sep tember, but the affair was postponed this year in order that the football men might participate. Officers of the club are: Lana Sims, presi dent; A. T. Allen, Jr., vice president; Kenneth Baker, secretary; H. H. Cate, treas uirer; Lawrence Laughlin, senior leader; W. 0. Galletly, j union leader. ASSOCIATION ENTERTAINS WITH FEED Officeras for the Year Elocted and Business Transacted The Carolina Alumni Teach ers' Club held their anhual meeting in Flynn Hall last Fri day. This was the largest gathering of the club since its organization, both the alumni and alumnae teachers were well represented. Heretofore the men have held their meet ing in one place and the women in another, but it was decided that the two clubs would have their annual gathering together this year. During the meeting a ban quet was served and several talks were made by both the men and women present. R. W. Wade, General Alumni Secretary, had charge of all ar rangement; J. Harvey Wither spoon, President of the Caro lina Teachers' Club, presided. Speeches were made by J. C. Hungerpiller of the Piedmont High School. Miss Jessie Fra ser, of the Columbia High School, Miss Minnie Clare Yar borough, of the Winthrop Fac ulty, M. M. Rector, Superin tendent of Eastover School, W. C. Taylor, of the Westminister High School, J. E. Swearingen, State Superintendent of Educa tion, R. W. Wade, Alumni Sec retary, Prof. Wardlaw, and D. W. S. Currell. After the banquet a business meeting was held and the fol lowing officers elected for the coming year. George Harris Webber, Su perintendent of the Public Schools of Beaufort, president; Mrs. Lueco Gunter, Columbia, Vice-President; M. M. Rector, Eastover, Vice-President; R. W. Wade, Columbia, Secretary and Treasurer.
