SOPHOMORE BATTLE SENIORS TO TIE.1 (By W. L. R.) The Seniors and Sophomores clashed in a very good and hard-fought game of football Tuesday afternoon, the first of the class games. The game was featured by fumbles,, kick outs, substitutes, long runs on recovered fumbles, long and speedy returns with punts and unlucky downfall4 of the es caping man carrying the pig skin. The Sophomores had the ball within ten yards of the big Seniors' goal once, while the Seniors never got closer than the 20-yard line of the Sopho mores, the game ending in a scoreless tie with the ball in the Sophomore's possession on their own 20-yard line. Both teams were good on the defen sive, but neither were able to gain thru the line of its oppon ents. The line plunges of H. Refo was the feature of the Seniors. Langston played stellar ball for the Sopho mores. He made good gains and saved his team twice from defeat, downing Hooks who was speeding toward the Soph's goal with a re covered fumble, and Refo on the 30-yard line with an inter cepted pass. He also outpunt ed his opponent, Norwood. Gus Black saved the Seniors from disaster when he was tackled by his own shadow on the Seniors' 20-yard line. Smoak kicked off to Langs ton, who returned 20 yards, be ing downed by H. Smith. Af ter several plays had failed to net any gains, Langston punt ed to H. Smith, who returned 3 yards. With the Sophomores holding their big opponents to no gains, Norwood punted out to Buchanan. The ball was fumbled when Hooks grabbed it and started for the Sopho more's goal, but was overtaken by Langston and downed on the 30-yard line. The ball see-sawed back and forth dur ing the rest of the period with neither side scoring. Early in the second quarter the Sophs rushed the ball to the Seniors' 20-yard line, where Thompson went in for H. Smith. The first play netted 10 yards. The half ended with no score for either side. At the beginning of the sec ond quarter, Langston kicked off to H. Refo, who returned 2 yards. With the Sophomores holding the ball went over. On the next play, H .Refo inter cepted a pass from Langston and ran 40 yards to the Sopho mores' 20-yard line, whee he was downed by Langston. Here the Sophomores held and the ball went over. Failing to gain, Langston punted out to Thompson, who returned 20 yards. On the next play, Black recovered a fumble and raced 40 yards to the Seniors' 20 yard line, where his shadow downed him. The second inter-class football game was played on Davis field yesterday between the Junior and Freshmen teams, the latter emerging victor by the score of 3 to 0. A field goal by Sizemore, playing quarterback for the first year men, was the only score possible. The tally was made in the second half. Sophomores and Juniors will play tomorrow. The Clariosophic debaters for the Roddey medal were chosen at preliminaries held last Monday night. J. R. Bryson will speak on the affirmative and E. B. Smith on the negative. Basketball practice will begin this afternoon at 5:45. All stu dents who can play, come onu The following program has been arranged for the Gypsy Smith meetings which are to be held during the third week in December: Music to be led by J. B. Belk. Dec. 17-Special music by Columbia College chorus. Dec. 18-Special music by Chicora College chorus. Dec. 19-Mr. Belk and his sister will sing. Dec. 20-Special music by quartette from choirs in town.l Dec. 21-Mass me'eting at' theatre in town, at which time music will be furnished by the combined choirs of the town churches.
