WASHINGTON AND LEE
CLAIMS CHAMPIONSHIP
Games Last Saturday Practi
cally Eliminated Rivals
Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 16.-When
Capt. Bonner of Auburn, fell on
a Mississippi A. and M. fumble
behind the Aggies' goal line Sat
urday and won the game 7 to 0,
the last of the old S. I. A. A.
undefeated football teams was
pulled from its pinnacle and a
finishing touch was put on the
thorough scrambling of cham
pionship claims that began with
the upsets of a week ago. As a
result, Washington and Lee, by
its defeat of Georgia Tech a week
ago and its victory over South
Carolina Saturday, is putting
forth strong claims for Dixie
honors, notwithstanding the con
tention that the Generals' sched
ule does not include games with
a sufficient number of represen
tative Southern elevens.
Georgia Tech's smashing vic
tory over Georgetown on Grant
field Saturday was easily the
surprise of the week. The Yel
low Jackets, employing Coach
Heisman's great shift, were out
to blot out the unpleasant mern
ory of the defeat by Washing
ton and Lee a wee kago and they
battered the Blue and Gray sev
erely throughout the contest. To
wards the end the defense of the
Hill-toppers crumbled complete
ly and the Yellowjackets ran
rough shod up and down the
field. The climax was reached
in the last period, when, after
Tech had plunged through the
Georgetown line for two touch
downs, Scarborough, a substi
tute ran 5 yards for the last
score.
Vanderbilt disposed of Vir
ginia, as had been forecast, but
with greater difficulty than ex
pected, the Old Dominion team
displaying much better brand of
football than in previous games
this year. Kuyk, a backfield
player, was especially strong for
Virginia, ploughing through the
Commodore line for substantial
gains whenever called upon. Mc
Guigan's team appartently has
found itself after a very differ-'
ent showing in the early games
of the year.
Auburn and Tech, Alabama
and Mississippi A. and M., Van
derbilt and Sewanee, Tennessee
and Kentucky, are among the
games yet to be played, and the
contest between the Plainsmen
and the Yellow Jackets will be
watched as affording the best
opportunity for further upsets.

IN Y.M.C.A. CIRCLES
Dr. J. A. Brunson, pastor of
the First Baptist Church of
Sumter made an address before
the regular meeting of the Y.
M. C. A. last Wednesday night.
He took for his subject "Chris
ianity" and treateed it very
creditably. He stressed the
fact that Christ was truly the
son of God and went into a dis
cussion of the subject of his
divinity.
Dr. Brunson is well known
thruout the entire state as one
of the leaders in his denomina
tion. He was attending the
meeeting of the Baptist State'
Convention last week and was
secured to speak for us in the
place of Dr. Quick, who. was
unable to come.
Much interest is being shown
in the race for Bible Class hon
ors among the various classes.
Last week's attendance was a
decided improvement over that
of the week before, and it is
hoped that more yet will at
tend the classes. The group of
Freshmen lead by Norwood is
leading at present with 56
points. Ed Smith's class is sec
ond with 50, while Perry uomes
third, with 48. There are 96
men now eligible for the B. D.
G. banquet which is to be given
to those having perfect attend
ance. It might be remarked
that this is the largest number
of men that have ever attended
classses so regularly at the uni
versity. The secretary expects
at least 50 more to join the
classes before Christmas.
Following is the standing of
the other teams:
Winter, 48.
Corley, 46.
Bryson, 43.
Fefo, 421.
Stevenson, 41.
Thomas, 40.
Foy, 32.
Rogers, 32.
Hunter, 24.
Guy Gullick is attending the
International Convention of the
Y. M. C. A. in Detroit this week
as the representative of the Uni
versity.
nessee's5 33 to 12 victory over
Cincinnati, North Carolina A.
and E.'s 3 to 0 win over V. P.
I., Alabama's 23 to 0 defeat of:
Louisiana State University and
Florida's 64 to 0 win over Stet
son are worthy of note. Se
wanee's invasion of Texas end
ed in disaster, the Tigers return
ing on the short end of 19 to
17 score in a game with Rice,
of Houston.
