MOOT COURT HEARS INTERESTING CASE Bryson and Oxner, Lawyers for Defense, Win After a short meeting of the Law Association Thursday eve ning the moot court held its regular session with Prof. Nelson J. Frierson sitting' as trial judge. The case on docket for the evening was that of the State v. Sam Gowlend indicted for murder. The State was represented by Messrs. Carothers and Thompson. The defendant was represented by Messrs. Bryson and Oxner. The case was a very long drawn out one both sides offering three witnesses each. After a very able and convincing argument by all the attorneys, the judge charg ed the jury very thoroughly on the law and after being out for sometime the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. LITERARY SOCIETIES HAVE INTERESTING HISTORY (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1.) earlier days; many men do not join. This is to be greatly re gretted. The two student publica tions, "The Carolinian," found ed as a monthly in 1882, and "The Gamecock," a weekly, begun in 1906 are property of the two societies. The place of meeting of the Clariosophic Society was changed in 1820 to a room over the chapel, and the meetings took place thereafter regular ly after supper on Saturday. A charter of incorporation was secured from the legisla ture in December, 1820. When Legare College was completed, the third story was turned over to the Clariosophic So ciety as its permanent home The cost of furnishing it was borne by the Society. In Feb ruary, 1849, the new hall was dedicated. When the Euphradian So ciety gave up its meetings in the chapel and moved in 1820 into a hall of its own, it occu pied part of the upper floor of the center of DeSaussure Col lege. Twenty-eight years later the upper floor of the newly erected Harper College was given by the trustees to the Euphradian Society. This was fitted up by the Society and dedicated December, 1848. The work of the two socie ties was interrupted by the War Between the States as the college was closed from Feb ruary, 1862 until January, 1866. The Euphradian Society was disbanded during the Radical Regime and reorganized in 1882. The Clariosophic So ciety was continued under the new conditions until the clos ing of the institution in 1877 closed the society. In 1882 it also resumed its existence with the reorganization of the col lege. Since then the societies have gathered strength from year to year although the member ship has not increased in pro portion to the whole student body as that of ante-bellum days. The two societies have given to the state, the south and the nation some of their greatest leaders. The Clariosophic and Euphradian Societies have played no small part in shap ing the destiny of the country through the leadership of their graduates. The Hypatian Literary So ciety which is as yet compara tively young on the campus was founded in the fall of 1915, by a number of co-eds. This Society developed out' of the Parthenican Society which was organized in 1900, at the sug gestion of Mrs. G. A. Wau chope. This existed for a num ber of years, but was finally abandoned. The Hypatian was then organized, using its broth er societies tIe Euphradian and Clariosophic as models, and having for its purpose the pro motion of sociability to the University among its members, From the first it has had an up hill fight, for never has its membership been large enough to attempt any thing of great importance. However, for the last two years it has grown steadily and with the great in crease in membership and the splendid literary talent in the Society, the co-eds feel that the Hypatian will this year attain its rightful place upon the campus.
