Whereupon the entire class arose and left the room en masse. Concerning Numbers. It is very interesting to note the great increase in the num ber of students at practically every college in the South and particularly gratifying to us to think of having the largest en rollment in our 115 years of ex. istence. 'Tis true that in 1915 we had a total of 587 students at the close of the session and that thus far we have only 480 for 1919. But on October 1, 1915 there were enrolled in the University only 305 com pared to 480 this year. De cember 1 of the former year saw only 466 registered. Thus it is plain that we are two months ahead of 1915 and there is no doubt but that our enrollment at the end of the session will have reached the 600 mark. THE B. D. G.'s Have you ever heard of 'em? Well, they have been here be fore and they are with us again. Perhaps this little piece of poetry will help you out Caesar got one in the neck, Alexander did not live his time, Napoleon hia Waterloo met, by heck, And Kaiser Bill lost his River Rhine. Nicholas went at the sound of the gong. All these men have ceased to be; You see they all got in the . wrong. They never joined the B. D. G. And the B. D. G's. will get you if you don't watch out. What are they? You'll find out in chapel tomorrow morn ing. We should be exceedingly careful in the way we commu nicate with Miss Pony Sloan. The boys, if they only stopped to consider, would not "kid" her any more. On the last oc casion she sent letters to the State Representatives and Sen ators and also to Governor Cooper telling them that the upper classmen were beating the freshmen to death-which, of course, is not so. This was told to her in a joking way and she took it seriously. You can see what harm this will do the university if she continues to write such letters. It's best to stop teasing her. At a recent meeting of the Joint Assembly a motion was passed allowing the Editor of the Gamecock. the privilege of selecting his own assistant ed itors from the student body and athletic association, thereby departing from the old system of having these men selected by the organizations. A commit tee was also appointed to frame a new constitution for the Gamecock and submit it for ap proval at the next meeting. The editor has appointed the following assistant editors to begin work immediately and continue through the first term: Buchanan--Student Body. Brockinton-Athletics. Lightsey-Y. M. C. A. Quattlebaum--Social Beck-Clariosophic. Stevenson-Clariosophic. Rogers-Clariosophic. Hunter.-Euphradian. Refo-Euphradian. Kohn-Law. Miss Huggins-Co-ed. Two weeks ago we published in the Gamecock a copy of the constitution of the Student Association. We beg to make a correction in Art. II, section 1, where the Euphradian and Clariosophic Societies are ap portioned one dollar each. It should be "fifty ents" ach. LITERARY SOCIETIES Euphmadian The Euphradian Literary So ciety held its regular meeting Saturday night. The sched uled program was carried out and new members were ad mitted to the society. The de bate on the query "Resolved: That President Wilson's Mexi can Policy merits aproval," was unusually livel1 and interesting The judges decided in favor of the affirmative, represented by H. B. Refo and August Kohn, Jr. Clarisophic At its regular meeting last Saturday night the Clariosophic Literary Society had the honor of being addressed by . Prof. Rucker, of the -law school. As an honorary member of the so ciety, Prof Rucker occasionally attends the meetings and al ways has a live message for the members. Among the high principies that the University of South Carolina stands for Prof. Ruck er mentioned honor and polite ness. He said that the honor system was born at the Uni versity about onwe 'hundred, and nine years ago and has ever since been adhered to and rev erenced. Prof. Rucker said that politeness, or courtesy, is one of the greatest capitals that a man could invest in and is something that has to be cul tivated. A very forceful plea for more red-blooded energy and wholeheartedness among the students was made by Prof. Rucker. "Mistakes are not to be laughed at," he said, "but should be deeply regretted and a determination made to suc ceed the next time." He also stressed the point that habits formed here at college by the students will be lasting and therefore earnestness in what ever he does, should be a chief characteristic of every Univer sity student. At this writing the Caro linian is being put together and will be ready for distribu tion on or about October 15. This issue contains a variety collection of poetry and prose and will be one of the best pub lished since the magazine was reinstated last fall. The staff is composed of competent men; all of whom have had some ex perience in the line of publica tions, and can give us a good magazine every month if they reenive proper support.
