NEW DEPARTMENT IS PROGRESSING RAPIDLY (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1.) work in this field of rural economics and rural sociology. Therefore Carolina in taking this step is as usual keeping in line with the educational prog ress of the times. A considerable interest has been manifested from the out set in the courses offered in the new department. A good en rollment was secured in the course in Constructive Rural Sociology, and this class is now engaged in the serious study of the social problems of rural life in the State and nation. The class of a dozen or more in Rural Economics is studying the economic problems of farm life from mainly a farm manage ment standpoint. This course should have a special appeal to students interested in com merce and finance; for it pre pares them to more thorough appreciate the farmer w' is certainly at the basis of our financial prosperity in this State. A new department is the lab oratory course in Rural Eco nomics. In this the student is assigned a special problem in the economic or social life of South Carolina. This problem is worked up in the depart mental library under the sur ervision of the professor in charge. This course should have especial appeal to Juniors and Seniors and Graduate stu dents interestd in the investi gation of problems in the life of their native State. The re sults of such studies will be published from time to time in the University News and Exten sion Bulletins and given to the people of the State as evidence of the interest that the Uni versity is taking in the rural development of South Carolina. The professor in charge of this department is Dr. Wilson Gee. He is a native South Car olinian and spent the most of the early years of his life on a farm in Union County. He was graduated from Clemson Col lege in the class of 1908, being awarded the Norris Medal given for first honor place in his class of 85 men. He re ceived the M. A., degree from the University of South Caro lina in 1910. Since then he has pursued graduate work in the Un'iversity of Chicago, Univer sity of Wisconsin, and the Uni versity of California, receiving the degree of Ph. D. from the latter institution in 191 3. Dr. Gee has been on the University faculty before, has served four years on the faculty of Emorv University and comes to Caro lina from Clemson where he was assistant director of the Agricultural Extension Service. This work has given him an ex cellent opportunity to become acquainted thoroughly with the agricultural problems of the State. The new department has a very vital and interesting part of the life of the State as its sphere of activity. It should in its logical development be pro ductive of many stock-taking studies in the life of the State; for its laboratory will be South Carolina. It should eventually help to point where South Car olina leads, where she lags and suggest from its studies the way forward. The following letter was re ceived by Prof. Keith from James F. Whitescarver who graduated at the University several years ago. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1919 Dear Professor, I am on my way to Shanghai, China. You may have known that I have been in New York with an export and import firm since getting out of the army. I went with the company look ing forward to going abroad and now that desire, my wand erlust, is being satisfied. It is not by any means a foolish no tion or a sudden impulse, but a good business proposition. As the' boys say "Im sitting pretty." China is opening up by leaps and bounds and I believe I'm headed in the right direc tion at the right time. I am most enthusiastic over the trip and the opportunities ahead. I left New York Monday aft ernoon on the Twentieth Cen tury, the through train to Chicago. There we took in the annual chemical exposition "putting up" at the Congress Hotel. We pulled into Winnipeg this morning and are awaiting other members of our party coming in on the Canadian Pa cific tomorrow. I'm looking forward with great anticipa tion to the scenic trip through the Rockies to Vancouver. We sail October 2nd on the "Em press of Russia." Sincerely, James F.
