CAROLINA LOSES FIRST
TO PRESBYTERIANS
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1.)
throughout the game; a fact
which is perhaps excusable
- when we consider that. she is
the sister school of the Pres
byterians.
Details.
The first three quarters
found the contest practically P
stand-off, little ground being
gained by either side. The
third quarter ended with the
ball on Carolina's 35-yard line,
the visitors running one play
without noticeable gain just as
the quarter ended.
The fourth began with an
unfortunate mix-up on the
number of downs. The officials
overlooked the play that had
closed the preceding period,
and when an incompleted for
ward pass opened the fourth
period, it was declared second,
when it should have been third.
Two line plays advanced the
ball only about six yards, and
the ball should have -gone over
to Carolina, but when it was
too late it was discovered that
the Presbyterians had been
spotted a down. So on the fifth
down, Belk kicked over the
goal line and the ball was
placed in play on the 20-yard
line. Allen kicked 20 yards.
Two line plays failed and Skin
ner intercepted a long forward
pass. Seaborn was put into the
struggle and after a line play
resulted in only a slight gain,
Seaborn took four yards around
right end. Allen went back to
kick andl got only about 18
yards when the pass was bad.
He had another down and
might have fallen on the ball
and tried it again with profit.
The Blue Stockings ran 'two
plays and; failing to gain, Belk
kicked outside on the two-yard
line.
Allen kicked 20 yards and by
short line plunges Belk and
Richardson brought the ball to
the goal line where Carolina
-held and took the ball a scant
inch from the line. Presbyterian
was penalized five yards for
offside play on the fourth down
but Carolina waived the pen
alty and took the ball. Allen
kicked out from behind his
goal line, but the kick lacked
distance and the Presbyterians
were in excellent position again
Short drives against the line
brought the ball witbin seven
yards of the goal posts where
D. Blakely shot off right tackle
for the touchdown. Goal was
missed.
Less than two minutes of
play remained when the lone
counter was made and the
game ended almost immerliate
ly, Carolina receiving a kick
off and running but two plays
before the .whistle sounded for
the end of the contest.
Erskine will play here next
Saturday.
