VARIETY OF COURSES BE
GIVEN IN GYM WORK
Tennis, Wrestling, Boxing and
Apparatus Classes Conducted
By Van Meter.
The Physical Department
of the University of South Car
olina will offer a most extensive
program of physical activities
to the student body this year.
The return of many of the
men who made the work of this
department such a success in
16-17 together with the incom
ing of so many high school
athletes gives as?urance of the
largest enrollment in the de
partment in recent years.
The program includes in ad
aition to the regular gymnas
ium work special classes in box
ing, wrestling, tumbling and
such outdoor games as tennis,
play ground baseball. In ad
dition to these forms of recre.
ation credit will be given for
work done on the regular var
sity teams put out by Coach
Foster and his staff of assis
tant coaches.
The program for the young
ladies is going to be just as
interesting as that for the men.
Miss Dorothy Vaughan will as
sist the physical director with
the young ladies classes and it
is hoped that the enrollment in
this special class will be larger
than last year. The hours for
the young ladies' class will be
Tuesday and Thursday from
four to five thirty. The hour for
the third period has not yet
been selected.
The men's classes will meet
on Monday, Wednesday and
Friday at 4 p. in., and the work
will be so arranged that every
one in the class will have a hard
work out at a number of differ
ent kinds of exercise during the
hour or more that the class
continues. Because of war con
ditions last year the medals for
wrestling and boxing were not
offered but this year handsome
gold medals will be offered in
the department to the best all
round gymnast, the best wrest
ler, the best boxer, and the best
gymnast 'in the young ladies'
class. There may be silver and
gold medals offered for the 2nd
and 3rd places in each of these
contests.
The class in basketball
teams will be organied as soon
as practible and a sliver loving
cup will be offered to the win
ning team in a ser'ies of basket
ball games that will be played
before Xmas if possible. The
playing of these games before
the regular season opens will
enable every basketball player
in the university to play and it
is hoped will discover some
good varsity material from
among the new students.
A call will soon be made for
those interested in the cross
country run that is held annu
ally at Clinton on Thanksgiv
ing day. It is hoped that quite
a number will be interested in
this form of athletics.
The President of the Univer
sity has assured the physical
director of his desire to provide
ample tennis courts for those
who are* interested in that
splendid game and a tourna
ment is planned for the spring
months that will be open to the
members of the student body.
A large numbe: ^f the re
turned soldiers are keenly in
terested in boxing and a class
will begin work with the gloves
on Wednesday afternoon and
the physical director hopes to
secure the assistance of some
of the best mature boxers in
and around Columbia in de
veloping the men that will come
out for this work.
Wrestling will be one of the
most popular sports in the gmy
nasium this year, many of the
men who were interested in
former years are back and oth
ers who have seen or taken
part in wrestling matches both
in the army and navy are keen
to get at the sport again. In
this class the physical director
hopes to secure the assistance
of Mr. Drew Spigner who is
easily the best amature wrestl
er in this part of the State.
In the apparatus work on the
gym floor Gallety, Jenkins and
other star gymnasts will be on
hand to assist Mr. Van Meter
and it is hoped that a gym team
will be secured that will be
good enough to go out over the
State and give exhibitions at
the larger high and prep
schools, under the direction of
the extension department of
the University.

SHORTHAND
THE LATE ELBERT HUBBARD who was one of America's fore
most thinkers and writers on worth-while subjects, said
"If I were twenty, with an ambition to succeed in business, I
would study Stenography. I believe theer are better and bigger
opportunities in business today than the world has ever before
offered, and I believe that Stenography offers a quicker, surer, safer
and saner pathway to success than any other field of commercial
endeavor. The number of big business men today who began their
business careers as stenographers is clear beyond and out of all
proportion to any other position."
THE STEPPING STONE TO SUCCESS.
To the young man planning a business career and seeking the
quickest and surest road to rapid advancement and promotion to

HAND.
Railroad Officials, District Managers and executives of Corpora

ful men, now prominent in business, professional and political
life, POINT WITH PRIDE to the fact that THEY began life as
STENOGRAPHERS, which positions enabled them to rapidly learn
the intimate details of business, and win advancement to the execu
tive positions with big salaries.
