EXTENSION DEPARTMENT PLANS YEAR'S WORK Student Debating Teams to Visit State High Schools. The function of a State in stitution is two-fold ; its first purpose is to serve the students in as many ways and as elli ciently as possible ; second, to serve the interest of the State as a whole. To pccomplish thi.i latter purpose the University Extension Department was formed several years ago, with its motto, "Our Campus, the State." The efforts of this de partment is to place the entire resources of the University, physical and personal ability and energy of the faculty, and the expert knowledge of the in stitution at the disposal of the State. To this end there has been a manifest increase of in terest on the part of the trus tees and faculty of the Univer sity of South Carolina. The University Weekly News, with Dr. Reed Smith as editor, will be published by the Extension Department for free distribution throughout the State. This paper is not to be limited to the interests of the University, but will contain ar ticles of general interest to the different sections of South Car olina and to the people gener ally. It endeavors to keep the peo ple informed in short, terse ar ticles of the whole educational world, and to give a social bird's-eye view of the needs and suggested improvements of whatever endeavor seems most timely and important. An%her publication, known as the Educational Journal, is to be issued by the Extension Department. Prof. Patterson Wardlaw is to be the editor of this monthly journal, with other members of the faculty as as sistant editors. The theme of this publication is to be direct ed to education throughout South Carolina, with particular reference to the high schools. Working in close co-opera tion with the Extension Depart ment will be the Alumni Secre tary, who will edit and distri bute an Alumni Magazine. The chief purpose of this magazine wvill be to keep the alumni of the University informed of the activities, interests and general welfare of the institution. Another important work of this department is that to be performed by Prof. Wilson Gee. Prof. Gee will make educational resources and wel fare movements of various counties. Suggestions will be made as to the general progres siveness and efficiency with the view of aiding less progressive counties and communities. The students of hte Univer sity will also be asked to co operate and lend assistance to further the work of the Exten sion Department. It is planned to send to some of the high schools of the State a Univer sity debating team, affirmative and negative, to conduct a model debate. Accompanying this team will probably be the University quartet. This will not only be a live and timely entertainment, but will also be of much educational value, es pecially to the pupils of the school. The former work carried on by the department for some years is to be increased and en larged. This consists chiefly of popular lectures, publication of bulletins on timely subjects, aiding teachers' associations and rallying and encouraging the high schools of the State to a larger and increasingly effi cient participation in high school literary societies and athletics. The efforts and active inter est of the entire faculty and trustees is pledged to aid the undertakings of the depart ment. The faculty committee on extension is composed of Dr. A. C. Moore, Prof. A. Courte nay Carson, Dr. Jouse E. Miller, Prof. Wilson Gee and Dr. Reed Smith, who serves as director with Mr. J. 0. VanMetre as as sistant. The quarters of the depart ment will be on the second floor of Legare College. Equipment is being installed and the office force assembled. Active work will be begun within the next few days.
