ware, commanding Co. D.: For
exceptional heroism and high
sense of duty displayed while
his company was in action be
tween Hill 188 and Alvin
Creek, from September 28, to
October 6, 1918, inclusive. The
commander of Company D fell
mortally wounded during the
afternoon of September 28,
1918, while the company was
about to execute a flanking
movement, Lt. Boulware imme
diately took command and suc
ceeded in driving the enemy
out of a strong position and
capturing a battery of five
trench mortars and two ma
chine guns. During the after
noon of September 29th, 1918,
Company D was subjected to a
terrible artillery bombardment
for two hours, during which
time the company lost one of
ficer and more than twenty
men. The company moved for
ward again during the morning
of September 30th, 1918,
through a heavy artillery and
machine gun barrage over a
flooded area during which time
it suffered heavily. From Oc
tober 1st to October 6th, 1918,
the regiment was in reserve
and Co. D was held in shell
holes in an exposed position
and frequently subjected to ef
fective artillery fire. During
this entire period Lieut. Boul
ware commanded his company
so skillfully and treated the
element of personal danger
with such utter disregard that
he inspired the members of his
command with much the same
spirit of courage and so main
tained a high degree of morale
during this long period of con
tinuous danger and hardship,
although he was sick from ex
posure and had a high fever for
three days. He refused to be
evacuated until his company
was relieved.
