TRUSTEES OF UNIVERSITY HOLD SPECIAL MEETING Plan to Visit North Carolina to "Get ideas" Trustees of the university in special session at the university yesterday to ferret out causes incident to the general unrest at the institution and to investi gate the student body, a major ity of which signed a petition several weeks ago asking the trustees to remove Dr. W. S. Currell as president of the school, delegated the commit tee on organization of the board with power to make a thorough investigation at the university and take final action in whatever way the committee may see fit to dispose of the trouble at the institution. The committee on organiza tion to conduct the investiga tion is composed of Governor Cooper, L. P. Hollis of Green ville and D. R. Coker of Harts ville. The governor acts in place of C. E. Spencer of York, who asked to be relieved be cause of relationship with Dr. Currell. A section of the by laws of the university by which the trustees adopted their reso lution delegating the above committee to act reads: "There shall be a standing committee on organization con sisting of three members (of the board of trustees), whose duty it shall be to thoroughly inform themselves of the inter nal workings of the university, of the status and work of each and every officer and professor and teacher, of the habits and behavior of the students, of the management of steward's hall, of the condition and preserva tion of the property and of any thing that may be for the good of the institution." The trustees dismissed the petition of the students asking for a new president and hearti ly indorsed Governor Cooper's letter to the student body tell ing that body that the board felt capable of managing af fairs at the university and that the State might rest assured that affairs of the institution would not be slurred over. The board took the view that the governor had clearly stated matters in his letter and dis missed the petition on these grounds. The trustees made no statement as to their attitude towards the 166 students who signed the petition, but it was said yesterday that some mem bers were inclined to take sum mary action against all the stu dents. The trouble at the university was somewhat augented Wednesday afternoon when the president of the student body was indefinitely suspend ed from the institution by the discipline committee because he "presided at an illegal meet ing of the student body." The students held a meeting Wed nesday morning and voted to declare a holiday in order that they might see the tank parade on "Liberty day." The discipline committee say that the president had no authority to entertain a motion to declare a holiday, and furth er said that the entire meeting was out of order inasmuch as no permission had been grant ed by President Currell to hold the meeting. The president of the student body stated yester day that he had no knowledge of what was to take place at the meeting and merely presid ed at the request of other stu dents who were already in ses sion when he arrived at the meeting. The discipline committee' is composed of Dr. W. S. Currell, Dr. A. C. Moore and L. T. Bak er. This new angle in the sit uation may develop some inter esting sidelights when the com mittee on organization meets next Monday to start its final investigation, as some members of the board are said to be in clined to suspend all members of the student body absent from classes Wednesday. The trustees are to visit the University of North Carolina May 13, 14 and 15 to study conditions there and to "get ideas" from the sister institu tion. All members of the board will make the visit to the Tarheel institution. Those present at the meeting of the board of trustees Thurs day were: Governor Cooper, C. E. Spencer of York, P. A. Will cox of Florence, B. A. Hagood of Charleston, August Kohn of Columbia, S. A. Graham of Williamsburg county, Dr. W. T. C. Bates of Columbia, L. P. Hollis of Greenville and D. R. Coker of Hartsville. John E. Swearingen, State superintend ent of education, ex-officio sec retary of the board, was absent because of a meeting of the State board of education. At a regular meeting of th.e Hypatian society recently, Miss Catherine Love was elected valedictorian and Miss Roberta Camak junior orator.
