CURRELL REVIEWS
GONZALES' POEMS
"Poems and Paragraphs" Re
cently Issued in Book
Form
There recently came from
the press a volume called
"Poems and Paragraph," being
a collection of the poems and
paragraphs of Robert Elliott
Gonzales, the founder of the
gamecock and paragrapher of
nation-wide renown.
The following review was writ
ten by Dr. W. S. Currell.
"The foregoing noteworthy
volume recently issued by The
State should be of especikl in
terest to the students and alum
ni of the University of South
Carolina. Mr. Gonzales was
graduated from the university
with the degrees A. B. and A.
M. in 1909. While a student
he not only shone in the class
room, especially in the lan
guages, but was a leader in
athletics and in various other
college activities. All but two
of the poems published in the
present volume had appeared
in the university publications,
the Carolinian and the Garnet
and Black. I have been in
touch with college periodicals
for more than thirty years, and
I have never seen in any of
them so many poems from one
pen of such a high order of ex
cellence. If the nascent poet
had not turned paragrapher,
he would doubtless have occu
pied, in time, a secure place on
the higher slopes of Parnassus.
"However, the world at large,
to whose blurred vision, "the
''ght that never was on land or
sea" is only a dimly discerned
ray, will not regret that Mr.
Gonzales turned from poetry
to prose when he became a
member of the staff of The
State in 1911. He soon distin
guished himself in his new po
sition as a writer of crisp,
sparkling, epigrammatic para
graphs, which were widely
quoted throughout the United
States, as many as ten some
times appearing in one issue of
the Literary Digest, a periodi
cal conspicious for its selective
sagacity.
"The volume before me con
tains fifty pages of poetry, and
174 pages of paragraphs. The
remaining pages are devoted
to biographical details and to
tributes of well-merited praise
from various sources. The price
is $2.00 a volume .
"The University of South-Car
olina commends most cordially
this interesting volume which
perpetuates the memory of a
brilliant Troung poet and para
grapher, one of her most gifted
sn."
UNIVERSITY ALUMNUS
MEMBER VIGILANTES
Eugene H. Blake of Green
wood Author of War
Articles
Alumni of the University of
South Carolina will be inter
ested to learn of the popularity
of a series of articles prepared
by Eugene H. Blake, of Green
wood, for The Viglantes. Mr.
Blake is an alumnus of the uni
versity of the class of 1907.
The following article from the
Greenwood Journal tells of
Mr. Blake's success as a writer
of war articles:
Readers of The Daily Jour
nal, who have been reading the
articles by' Eugene H. Blake
which have been running in
this paper for some time, will
be interested to hear that this
series is appearing all over
America. The articles are ap
pearing in daily papers as
widely separated as the New
York Globe and Los Angeles
Tribune, Columbia State and
Spokane Spokesman-Review.
In 1914, when the war start
ed, Mr. Blake began studying
everything to be had on the
theory and history of kultur
and frightfulness. As soon as
this country was drawn in he
began writing on different
phases of the war from the
American viewpoint, with the
result that much of it, especial
ly this series of satire, has been
presented to the public by the
Vigilantes, the national society
of war writers.
The last of several letters of
appreciation to Mr. Blake from
the headquarters of the Vigi
lantes in New York said i n
part: "The Devil to the Kaiser
series has certainly been ex
ceedingly popular with the edi
tors and we are mighty grate
ful to you for giving it to us."
