CHIEF JUSTICE GARY SPEAKS TO LAWYERS University Moot Court Holds Regular Ses sion Chief Justice Eugene B. Gary, of.the supreme court bench from South Carolina, de livered a very interesting lec ture on the various phases of the law to the students of the law classes last Tuesday morn ing at 9:'30 o'clock. He spoke of his college career spent here, as one that he has always felt was a source of inestimable benefit to him in his success as a justice, and also commented on his long friendship with the Dean of the Law school, Prof. John P. Thomas, which began back in their college days at the University of South Caro lina. The chief justice is a judge of considerable note, as he has been on the bench for a num ber of years. The moot cotrt of the Law association met last Thursday night to dispose of the cases on docket of that term. The court composed of Messrs. P. N. Bec ton, M. K. Barr and C. C. Sloan, being constituted, the clerk read the case on docket, which was the case of Emily New vs. Della Brabant, an action to compel Della Brabant to con vey certain rents and profits and a certain moiety of land which the plaintiff claimed by inheritance. The defendant was represented by Miss Claudia Sullivan and Mr. T. L. Smith, and the plaintiff was represented by Messrs. J. I. Rice and W. E. Ackerman. Mr. Rice, counsel for the plaintiff, was present and argued the case for the plaintiff, while Miss Sullivan, counsel for the ,defendant, was present and argued the case for the defend ant. The court took the ques tion at issue under advisement and the verdict will be render ed at the next sitting of the court. In the case of James Darnell vs. William Weed, argued at the last session of the court the court handed down a verdict on the case. The decree o)f the court was that the defendant might retain the title in the land, but that he should be en joined against the constr'uction of a garage on the premises The court was moved by Mr. Shealy, counsel for the plaintiff in the case of John E. MeDard vs. Federal City Electric Com pany, that the case be moved up on the calendar and lhe set for a hearing on the 2nd of May, 1918. STEPHENSON NEW GAMECOCK EDITOR Business Managers for Next Year Were Also Elected J. J. Stephenson, Junior member of the Clarisophic society, was chosen- on last Saturday by the joint assem bly o fthe two societies to edit The Gamecock during the coming term. The newly elect ed editor has been a reporter on the staff for several terms and has done faithful work. His assistants will be chosen from the following: Claris ophic, Langford, M. C., Martin, T. S.; Lifford, J. P., Roderick M a c Dona1d; Euphradian, Buchanan, G. A., Refo, Hutch inson, Connor, Evans, Thom son, R. C., Thomson, M. B. At the same meeting busi ness managers and their as sistants for next year were elected for both Gamecock and Carolinian. The new Game cock manager is J. B. Burn of the Euphradian society. J. P. Sifford was chosen to assist him. C. D. Barr of the Claris ophic was elected to handle the business end of the Carolinian for the coming year. His as sistant is William Wiston, Jr. Refo was elected circulation manager for both Carolinian and Gamecock. It was decided to continue the same plan of combined publication that has been in use for this year, i. e., the Caro linian appears six times a year and on the weeks that the Car olinian is edited, The Game cock is not published. A motion was made by Buch anan, junior editor of the Caro linian, that the rule requiring contestants for Carolinian medals to enter articles in both first and second term issues of the magazine be suspended on account of the small number of Carolinians gotten out and of the irregularity in appearance. The motion was carried. As a result all who have entered ar ticles in Carolinians are eligi ble for the contest for Caro linian medals. Mr. M. F. Winter and IL. 0. Williams are in the infirmary with the mumps, but they ex pect to get out the latter part of this week. Mr. B. B. Brewer has been in the university infirmary and the Baptist hospital since the 7th of April with pluro p)heu monia. He is now in the uni versity infirmary and is getting along- niely.
