EXTENSION DIVISION PROVIDES FOR DEBATE Effort Being Made to Foster Oratory in High Schools The extension department of the University plans the organ ization before the end of the present scholastic year of a South Carolina High School Debating League, similar to those existing in many other States, for the purpose of en couraging debating among stu dents of the public schools. 6 Any institution of the State, rated as a public high school by the State high school inspec tor will be eligible for member ship in the league. It is plan ned to have a series of debates between the schools composing' the membership of the league in an effort to determine the best high school debating team of the State. Governor Manning has lent his support to the plan in a very practical way, offering a loving cup to the school whose team shall win the State honor. This team will be determined by a public contest held in the University chapel after a series of preliminary debates which will eliminate all save the best affirmative and the best negative teams of the State. There are 133 high schools of the State which are eligible for entrance in the competition for the Manning cup. At present championship contests in foot ball and track and in declamation are held at the University. The plan is to' lend encouragement to the work of high school literary societies where such exist and to foster an interest in debat ing- through the application of the championship idea to con tests in argumentation.
