The opening concert of the
University Glee Club was giv- t
en at Coker College on Friday
evening, December 14. An ex
cellent variety program was
given. The members who made
the trip to Hartsville were:
Thomas, Hawkins, Hagood, E.
P. Hodges, W. C. Hodges,
Boggs, Dusenbury and Bell.
Work which was suspended
on the law building now in
course of construction, has
been taken up anew. The tem
porary delay was due to ina
bility to secure brick. Con
tractors for government work
are experiencing the same dif
ficulty.
The recent period of extreme I
cold weather played havoc t
with water pipes on the cam- t
pus. All were frozen for I
more than a week and when I
the thawing process began, I
many burst. The steam pipes
of the library were put out of c
commission and three or four
days were required to restore
conditions to normal. After 3
a week's time plumbing fix- I
tures and steam pipes are be
ginning to function properly.
The fuel shortage has been t
relieved by action of Universi
ty authorities permitting sale (
of coal to students. s
Albert Larrieu, author of -
songs, a native of France, who
is on a tour of the United c
States was in Columbia, Satur
day, December 15, appearing
at the Auditorium of Columbia
College. With him were
Madame Lecomte and Mad- 3
ame Ariel. The fete was to
have been held in the Univer
sity Chapel under auspices of
the Cercle Francais but was
transferred to Columbia Co)
lege because of the death of
Dr. Chamberlayne which oc
curred Saturday morning.
Those who attended were
much pleased with the music
and the interpretations given
by the two actresses, and as a
result have a much clearer con
cep)tion of French music.
William Jennings Bryan,I
who was scheduled to speak (
in the Chapel on Sunday beforeI
Christmas, did not appear be-I
cause the prohibition amend-i
ment resolution was up for con
sideration in congress on Mon-1
day and Mr. Bryan was much
interested in the outcome. It I
is hoped that he will address 4
