Y. M. C. A. ADDRESSED
BY DABBS AND KING
Secretary Gives Interesting
Account of Visit to Vol
unteer Conference
The Y. M. C. A. meeting
Wednesday night was addres
sed by Lieut. J. M. Dabbs of
Camp Jackson and by Secre
tary King. Dabbs is pleasant
ly remembered on the campus
by many of the older students.
Mr. Dabbs spoke enthusias
tically of the work the Y. M.
C. A. is doing among the sol
diers of the training camps,
saying the men out of camp
have an unparalleled opportu
nity to help maintain this im
portant Christian organization.
Secretary King told of his
recent trip to Northfield,
Mass., where he attended a
meeting of the Student Volun
teer Conference. Almost
every nation was represented
in the council, Mr. King said.
The call was made for the
enrollment of 200,000 men to
go from America to the for
eign fields and South Carolina
must do its part.
The appeals for help made
by the representatives from
the various countries, Mr.
King said, would make almost
any man open his eyes and
want to help them to the
light. One half the world
can not read or write any lan
guage and have never heard
of Christ.
There is only one physician
to every million of the popula
tion of Indo-China and only
one minister, to every three
hundred thousand.
The most striking address at
the conference, Mr. King said,
was that of Dr. John R. Mott,
who had just returned from
the battle fronts. Dr. Mott
said: "The whole world is a
shaken mass. The pillows of
civilization are crumbling.
Commerce has failed, economic
interest shaken, home life
does not exist, education is un
certain and dangerous and or
ganized Christianity has been
disappointed." Also that "The
world is overburdened. The
war has cost one hundred bil
lions of dollars--five times the
cost of the 20 greatest former
wars. It has cost Germany
one-fourth her aggregate
wealth and eight millions of
men have died from wounds
or from being in prison
camps."
Dr. W. T. C. Bates and Au
gust Kohn of Columbia have
been re-elected trustees of the
University.
