BASKETBALL SEASON
OPENS WITH PROMISE
Members of Squad Get In
Good Practice---Now
on Pledge
With resumption of work
since the holidays basketball
practice has assumed a prom
ising aspect. Signal practice
has begun and the men have
been put on pledge. The team
got in about two weeks prac
tice before Christmas and the
form now displayed would in
dicate that Carolina will have
one of the best teams in years.
Along with other phases of
college life, basketball has
received its blow from the war,
losing two star players, Sims
and Talley. Talley volunteer
ed for service in the National
Guard and has recently been
designated to attend the third
series of officer training camps.
Sims enlisted in the coast artil
lery and has also been appoint
ed to a training camp. Mem
bers of last year's team report
ing for practice this year in
clude Waring, a guard; Bow
en, former captain and for
ward, and Martin, center.
Waring is captain of the team
and Bowen is manager. Means
and Weston, forwards and A.
Wardlaw and Seymour all of
whom played in a number of
games last year are showing
up well in practice. Other
members of the squad are
Vaughn of Columbia, Beall,
Clarke, Foy, Perritt, P.
Wardlaw, Sifford and Hooks.
The schedule has not yet
been completed due to uncer
tainty as to whether the Uni
versity would have basketball
at all. This question was al
so before the other colleges of
the State, final decision being
made at a meeting of represen
tatives from the various col
leges held recently in Flinn
Hall.
