BASKETBALL SEASON OPENS WITH PROMISE Members of Squad Get In Good Practice---Now on Pledge With resumption of work since the holidays basketball practice has assumed a prom ising aspect. Signal practice has begun and the men have been put on pledge. The team got in about two weeks prac tice before Christmas and the form now displayed would in dicate that Carolina will have one of the best teams in years. Along with other phases of college life, basketball has received its blow from the war, losing two star players, Sims and Talley. Talley volunteer ed for service in the National Guard and has recently been designated to attend the third series of officer training camps. Sims enlisted in the coast artil lery and has also been appoint ed to a training camp. Mem bers of last year's team report ing for practice this year in clude Waring, a guard; Bow en, former captain and for ward, and Martin, center. Waring is captain of the team and Bowen is manager. Means and Weston, forwards and A. Wardlaw and Seymour all of whom played in a number of games last year are showing up well in practice. Other members of the squad are Vaughn of Columbia, Beall, Clarke, Foy, Perritt, P. Wardlaw, Sifford and Hooks. The schedule has not yet been completed due to uncer tainty as to whether the Uni versity would have basketball at all. This question was al so before the other colleges of the State, final decision being made at a meeting of represen tatives from the various col leges held recently in Flinn Hall. LIEUTENANT KNIGHT COMPLETES TRAINING Lieut. A. L. Knight who has just completed a six weeks' preliminary course of intensive training preparatory to be coming an aerial observer with the United States aero squad ron, passed through Columbia Friday on the way from- Aus tin, Texas, to his home at Page land. He completed the course successfully and ex pects to be promoted to a first lieutenancy before he receives orders to report for further training at a camp in this coun try or in France. This po sition was formerly held by J. S. Schneider, who has join ed the quartermaster's corps. W. S. Lindsay, Jr., has as sumed the duties of chairman of the religious meetings com mittee while the legislature is in session. J. C. Kearse, the chairman of this committee, has accepted a clerkship and has had to give up his Y. M. C. A. work for the present. E. B. Smith has been appoint ed chairman of the Bible study committee to fill the place madle vacant by the resigna tion of G. A. Buchanan, Jr. C. B. Seaborn has been ap pointed recording secretary in place of A. P. Talley, who did not return to college this year.
