CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
COPPED BY FLORENCE
Gate City Lads Show Super
iority over Winnsboro
Football Men.
Showing marked superiority
in all departments of play Flor
ence High School won the high
school championship of the
State for the second consecu
tive season by defeating Mt.
Zion School of Winnsboro on
Carolina field Friday afternoon
by a score of 40 to 0. A din
ner was served in the Universi
ty steward's hall at 6:30
o'clock in honor of the win
ners, the Winnsboro players al
so attending. Dr. Currell pre
sided and awarded the Sylvan
trophy cup.
The Gate City lads had the
edge on the boys from the
hills both in advancing the ball
and stopping the drives of their
opponents.
Mt. Zion braced for a few
minutes in the last period and
carried the fight into Florence
territory, but in the other per
iods Florence had decidedly
the better of the issue. The
Mt. Zion eleven negotiated
two forward passes for more
than 30 yards, but other at
#tempts at long passes were
failures. Florence could
have worked the forward pass
to greater success than at
tempted if the Gate City gen
eral had so desired, for the
Winnsboro defense against the
aerial attack was not impres
sive.
The ability of the Florence
backs to advance the ball ac
counted for the victory. Wheel
er; Blount, Holland and Cap
tain Timmons ran well with
the ball throughout..The cham
pions used the forward pass
sp'aringly, depending in the
main on a line attack and end
runs. Blount hit the line in im
pressive style, while Timmons
and Wheeler starred in the
open.
For Winnsboro Crawford
played good ball, especially at
the passing game. Tennant and
Willingham also played well.
The game was witnessed by
a larg, crowd, delegations
from Florence and Winnsboro
being dlecidedly in evidence
throughout.
The lineup was:
