COMPARISON OF SCORES DEVELOPS SURPRISES Football Teams Outplay Pre dictions of Sports Authorities. A comparative survey of the scores made by college football teams of the State presents many surprises. First reports from all the teams were that service in the war had so de pleted the personnel that the usual excellence of the sport could not possibly be maintain ed, but the game has developed many all round teams and not a few new stars who give great promise for future seasons. Clemson is the State cham pion, having won all the games played against South Carolina colleges, but the Tigers have not participated in as many games at home as have Caroli na, Citadel or Presbyterian College. P. C. is a close sec ond to the champions. Caro lina has scored 124 points to its opponents' 75, Presbyterian has scored 87 to 40 by its oppo nents and Clemson scored 81 to 29. These figures apply on ly to games against colleges in the State. The high school football championship (f South Caro- - lina will be decided on Friday, December 7, when Florence meets the Mt. Zion School of Winnsboro on the field of the University of South Carolina. The game is being staged by the extension department of the university, through which all details as to advertising, selec tion of officials, preparation of the field and other incidentals will be arranged. Florence has smashed all the opposition that was encounter ed in the Pee Dee section and a considerable strip of outly ing territory, while Winnsboro was chewing up the best offer ing of the Piedmont. The cup offered by Sylvan Bros., will be presented to the winning team by Governor Manning at an informal dinner tendered both teams, their coaches and professors which will be served in the stewards' hall at eight o'clock the even ing of the game. Prof. A. C. Carson has charge of arrange ments for the dinner. PROF. M. GOODE HOMES GETS BETTER PLACE M. Goode Homes, captain of engineers in the officers' re serve corps, on leave of absence as dean of the department of engineering of the University of South Carolina, has been transferred by the war depart ment from Marfa, Texas, where he has been stationed since May, to Camp Lee at Peters burg, Virginia. Captain Homes went to Marfa assistant to the engineer in charge of the Big Bend district, embracing 400 miles of the Mexican bor der. He was shortly placed in complete charge of all gov ernment engineering work in that district.-Weekly News.
