LETTER TO KAISER
FROM THE DEVIL
Eugene Blake of Greenwood
Making Literary Fame-Men
ber of Vigilantes.
One of the Southern men who
have recently been honored with
membership in The Vigilantes is
a South Carolinian, Eugene H.
Blake of Greenwood. Mr. Blake
is well known in Columbia, where
he lived while a student at the
University of South Carolina, and
where he acquired a fondness for
pure-literatur , which not even a
strenuous and successful business
career has ever succeded in
smothering.
During his college days he ser
ved as editor of the various cam
pus publications and was a fre
quent contributor to The State
under the pen name of Sammy
Shy. He has recently a short
story entitled "Selma's Suitors"
to the All-Story Magazine which
has called forth much favorable
comment. He has also recently
written some war propaganda,
which is being widely circulated
by the government to aid in
arousing the country to a realiza
tion of the importance of the
problems con fronting the A meri
can people.
The latest of Mr. Blake's war
lucubrations which ought to give
the Kaiser an uncomfortable half
hour, is the following:
(Exclusive Service of The Vigi
lantes.)
Infernal Palace, Hades.
My Dear Kaiser:
I)on't let the war get on your
nerves so! I notice you seem
worried since the United States
came in.
Remember that there are more
ways to win the war then with
bullets. The allied nations used
to buy 88,000,000 bushels of
American wheat. But since we
have forced the European farmer
from the furrow into the trench.
America must sell her allies
220,000,000 bushels of grain while
they fight us.
I agree with you that our prop
aganda has been effective in the
United States. Millions of
Americans still believe that you
did not start this war. Our
Bernstorff was a corker, Wilhelm.
Here's a plan. While your
Hindenburg feeds more faithful
Germans to Haig's cannon, and
your oldest boy feeds another
500,000 German boys to the
French cannon around Verdun to
save his reputation back home,
let us make a food flanking move
ment in America.
I'll keep enough lazy Americans
out of the fields to let crops rot:
tempt them to buy more than
is necessary, and serve as big
portions as they did in times of
of peace.
I will make the A merican house
wife waste food in her kitchen,
so as to take it out of the soldiers'
mouths. W h i l e w e destroy
American boys in Europe I will
make the United States a nation
of foodslackers.
Just leave it to me, Wilhelm,
and don't worry.
Faithfully your friend and ally.
The Devil.
The State.
We reprint the above for the
(benefit of our readers who may
not have noticed it in The State.
Eugene Blake is most pleasantly
remembered on the university
campus where he earned quite a
fine reputation as a student
particularly as a writer. The
Editor recalls a small group of
young men who were contempo
raries, and they were all writers
of exceptional ability. They
were: Eugene Blake, F. W. Brad
ley, Vernon Cook, Frank Coving
ton and George Reeves. We
doubt if Carolina has ever had,
at any one time, a group of finer
young men than these. THE
GAMECOCK rejoices in their suc
cesses, and hopes for a continu
ance of good things for them.
The Vigilantes above mention
ed is an organization. composed
of literary people of high rank.
Their purpose is to aid the gov
ernment in the effort it is making
"in arousing the country to a
realization of the importance of
the problems confronting the
American people." It is a dis
tinct -honor to be a member of
The Vigilantes, -and we want
to say that the honor has been
worthily bestowed. Ed.
Clariosophic Society
