J. 0. VANMETER WINS EUPHRADIAN DEBATE E. P. Hodges Second. Negative Gets Decision Speaking on the negative side of the query, "Resolved, That it would be for the best interests of Columbia to have a military cantonment of 25,000 troops plac ed here," J. 0. Van Meter won the annual Euphradian intra-so ciety debate held last night. Sec ond place was awarded to E. P. Hodges, also of the negative team. A medal is given the best individual debater. The men showed an unusual amount of study and their per formance surpassed in many re s.ects that of any inter-collegiate debater seen here this year. Both 'teams were especially strong on refutation. The other contestants were: G. E. Shand and J. B. Bates; the judges were: Thos. H. Peeples, Robert Moorman and W. M. Etchison. These men will become members of the medical enlisted reserve corps under the national defense act of June 3, 1916. This quota of men is to go to France as soon as it is fully organized and the personnel and necessary supplies are assembled. The service will be for the dura tion of the war. In all probabil ity this will be the first Ameri can group to reach France." "The age limit is 18 to 45, preferably under graduates. Clothing, transportation, etc., (luring the period of service will be paid by the government." We have been told that the universities which will supply the entire personnel and officers '-hosen from among their men, granting that some one can be found who has had sufficient ex ecutive and military training to* .justify his being appointed ser "The surgeon general's office is very anxious to have these first units in every way typical of the best citizenship. Please recom-nend men who will be, both in character and technical ability, representative of the standard of the University of South Carolina." SOCIETIES ELECT DEBATING COUNCIL Revised Constitution Adopted for Next Year At a called meeting of the joint assembly held in the Euph radian society hall last Saturday night a new constitution for the University debating council was adopted and the members for next year elected. The faculty members are: Professors Reed Smith and Marion E. Rucker; the Clariosophic members are: J. C. Kearse, J. M. Wells and. J. D. Brandenburg: the Euphra dian: E. P. Hodges, H. E. Hick lin and G. W. Collier. The revised constitution as adopted reads as follows: ARTICLE 1. The Debating Council shall be composed of nine members, as follows; the presi dent of the University. two other members of the faculty elected annually by the Euphradian and Clariosophic societies in joint assembly, and three members of each society elected by their re spective societies at the regular January elections. ARTICLE 11. The president of the University shall be ex o.t/ici Chairman of the Debating =oun cil. The Council shall elect a Secretary and a Treasurer from its student members. ARTICLE 111. The Council' shall arrange for, and have con trol over, all inter-collegiate de bates of the University, and the preliminaries to such debates; all other inter-collegiate forensic contests. (except as otherwise provided); and all inter-society forensic contests. ARTICLE IV. The Council shall meet at the call of t he Sec retary. All transactions of the Council shall be reported to the societies at their next regular meetings, and pubiilihcd in THE GAMECOCK in its next. issue. The presiding officer for all in ter-society contests will be se lected from the society whose representative won the preceding year. The chief marshal will come from the other society. In establishing this custom the so cieties hope to avoid all confusion as to which society the presiding officer and chief marshal should be picked from. A motion was passed creating a recording secretaryship for the joint assembly. H. G. Little of the Clariosophic was elected to his office for the coming term. Hodges Valedictorian At the meeting of the Euphra dian Society last Saturday night E. P. Hodges was elected society valedictorian to succeed D. S. Polier who left Sunday for Fort Oglethorpe.
