CAROLINA LAWYERS GIVE ANNUAL FEAST Junior Law Student Speaker of Occasion The annual banquet of the Law Association, held on Tues day evening, May 8, at the Jef ferson Hotel was an enjoyable affair, both from the standpoint of "eats" and of the fine fellow ship and speeches. Mr. Erwin Carothers. the new !y elected president of the Law Association, acting as toastmas ter, called on Mr. Harry Hicklin for a few a)pr'opriate remarks. ''ollowing in turn: Messrs. Frank Thompson. J. 1). I)usen bu ry, C. It. Spencer, and J. Her lir. each of whom responded in an admirable manner. The outstanding feature of the evening was the speech of Mr. l-'allaw of Monetta, S. C.. a re c-elit and valuable acquisition of t lie .i unior law class, who has Von (fuite a hit of noteriety for his (munlt remarks amd occasional witticisms. and who on this ov casion lived up in every respect to his well deserved reputationl. The sub ject for extemporaneous debate was, 'Resolved, It is better to have a dead hero than a live hus band.'' Misses Kelly and Chavis were on the afiirmative, while Misses Ayer and Seawright up held the negative. The affirm ative pointed out that it is more satisfying to have a dead hero to worship than a live husband, who would turn out a disappointment any how: that a dead hero could not interfere with one having a gay old time while a husband might; then, too, a dead hero gave an excuse for a llaCkness and a veil, the height of every woman's ambition. The Iega tive, on the other hand, proved how colvenient it is to have somle one to foot the bill:, to lay all the blae on, and to lend variety to one's existence, for a dead hero is always there. ready to be wor shipped, but no one can tell ,just where a husdand will be.
