THE CAROLINIAN Most issues of college maga zines are made up of articles contributed by the editors. The, April Carolinian is an exception' to this rule. The editors seem to have had nothing to do but edit. Their care did not extend to the proof reading. That is usually poor on amateur publica tions, but the queer freaks of transposition played with the simplest words in this issue sug gest that Mr. Jennings Otts' in-,: fluence has extended beyond his ! own contribution. The April number has twicejc as many essays-four-as stories. There are three poems. The editorials bear on national is sues, and do not even regard these from the college stand-' point. Of the two stories, there is more con centration in McElvy's "Price of Sea Supremacy." He tells a submarine story that goes straight to the point. "Marquis" is the title of a story of a Red Cross dog. The gist of the story is more touching than the rather conventional melodrama of "Sea Supremacy," but much of the material in the ten pages of the story is irrelevant. "Sea-Su premacy" is a short story boiled down to one incident. "Mar quis" is the frame work of a n')vel which -contains after all s one incident. Of the four essays two are serious efforts of a conventional type, and deserves all respect for their seriousness. The sub jects are somewhat big, and Plato, Cicero, Seneca, Montaigne, Bacon, and Emerson would frighten away more experienced writers from the fields of' "Friendship" and "Life," which is the apparent meaning of the "Margin" of Mr. Rice's essay. "Bobby Vaughan Sez" is an ex- r cruciatingly annoying half page of the thinnest sort of funny stuff. Compared to it a page of puns would be as rich as Falstaff. It Somebody ought to convert Mr. Octs. "Our Multitudinous Trials" is in the reviewersopinion thebest thing in the number. It sounds! honest, it is about a subject on I which the author is well inform ed, and it rises to eloquence. The figure of the "snails ofl ideas" upon the "wall of neces sity" shows genuine imagination t and best of all it is funny without d forcing the note. There are three poems, a short lyric "Raison d' Amour" by H. C. B., a- moralizing "Life'si Journey" by R. M. L. and "In e Life's Waters" by H. R. E. H. "Raison d'A mour" is a slight but smooth exercise in verse. e The "So there" in the last stanzat strikes too colloquial a note. ''Life's Journey" is a study of K Longfellow's "Psalm of Life."
