PERSONALS H. E. Hicklin has been at his home in Rock Hill for the past week with his father who is critically ill. Prof. J. E. Mills attended the sixth annual meeting of the South Carolina section of Amer ican Chemical Society. whic met at Clemson colloge Saturday. At a recent meeting of the senior class H. C. James was elected to serve with R. R. Har ley, previously elected, as senior speaker at commencement. At the last meeting of the Hypatian society the following officers were elected: Miss Roberta Andrews, president; Miss Elizabeth Chase, vice-pres ident; Miss Ruth Chavis, secre tary-treasurer; Miss Cathrine Love, critic. It has been found necessary to change the time and place of the meetings of the first-aid training class. Hereafter they will meet on Mondays and Thursdays at 5:15 at the Y. M. C. A. The first feature was exhibi tion dancing by eight of Colum bia's most graceful exponents of the modern dances. These were Misses Marguerite Patter son Roger Heyward. Miriam Sadler with A. L. Wardlaw, Jac queline Cooper with Lana Sims, and Sarah Cain with A. S. Tomp." kins. Second, and ,judging from the applause, the most pleasing of all, were the two solos by MKrris Lumpkin, "The Trumpe ter" and "America, Here's My l;oy." Then came little Miss l3(anche Rowlitte who gave her interpretation of the dancing wood nymph with professional skill, and then the Sextette from Lucia sung under the direction of Paul de Launay. The fifth attraction was con petitive dancing. About twenty couples entered but this number was gradually reduced by the .ldges who fi ally eliminated all butt t our couples. Those who re eeiv'ed respectively the four prizes were Marguerite Patter son witih Roger H-eywardl, Isa belle Whaley with Pat Murphy, Lila Mae Mimnaugh with Wilbur Means, and Miriam Sadler with Wmn. McIlwaine. Sixth and sev enth on the bill were De Leon Jones who danced the "hula hui la" with native Hawaiian lack of costume, and Miss Sadie Perry VIRGINIA PROFESSOR LECTURES ON BIBLE Making of The English Bible Subject of Address In a lecture in which he laid before his audience "The Mak ing of the English Bible" in as cicar-cut and interesting a light as a beautiful picture, William M. Forrest, professor of Biblical history and literature at the Uni versity of Virginia, yesterday morning at chapel charmed the students with his first talk in the exchange series. Dr. Forrest is one of the fore most Biblical scholars of the South. In his charming style he outlined the "growth and per fection of the Bible," the great est English classic." Beginning with the ancient Hebrew and Greek, the translations were traced from the Sepsuagint, the first complete Bible in the lan guage of the people, then the Latin Vulgate of the fifth cen tury A. D., the paraphrases of Caedmon and others in Anglo Saxon, then the first English Bible prepared by Wycliffe in 1880, that of William Tyndale. "the father of the English Bible in the 16th century,'" then nu merous others following the Renaissance and Reformation up to the climax of King James Version in 1611, upon which the best people of the E glish church worked for many years. )r. Forrest will lecture in the chapel tonight at 1:30 on "The English of the Bible;" and to morrow night at the same time l on "The Literary Influence of the Bible." Mr. Josephus Daniels, Mr. McAdco and other members of the Cab inet were present. Just before the debate Mr. Hicklin received a telegram with the di;tressing news that his father was critically ill. For awhile it seemed that the debate would have to be abandoned but showing the true Carolina spirit Mr. Hicklin remained to (10 his part in winning the debate, lie left immediately after the con test for his home in Rock Hill. A most attractive program for 1the debate was arranged, includ ing music, remarks by the chair man, etc. Embossed invitations were issued.
