PROHIBITION THEME
OF CHAPEL ADDRESS
S. W. Grathwell Lectures Before
Students Tuesday
"The liquor traffic in the United
States" was the subject of an
interesting and timely address
delivered Tuesday morning at
chapel hour by Mr. S. W. Grath
well. Southern Secretary of the
Inter-collegiate Prohibition As
sociation. Mr. Grathwell is one
of the most accomplished speak
ers who has appeared in chapel
this year. He is unusually well
up on his subject and delivers
his speech in a pleasing manner.
In his address Mr. Grathwell
said that the people of a year or
two ago used to think of' prohibi
tion as some sort of religious
sect, "1 am not asking you to
believe in the association at
once" said Mr. Grathwell, "but
I only ask for you to study the
proposition."
Von Moltke was quoted as say
ing that Germany's greatest en
emy was beer and not England.
"Three glasses of liquor." con
tinued the speaker. "lowers the
efliciency of a man 23', ; one glass
of beer 7%." The liquor traffic
pays over $300.000.000 per year
to our government but to offset
this it costs annually 66.000 lives
of mien between 21 and 70."

BE STAGED TODAY

The powers behind the "Rose
Pageant" twice proved t hern
selves pxxr weather prophets by
postponing that joyous occasion
first to Monday, then to Wednes
day of this week. The fete will
open at 4 o'clock and will last
until 6:30. The pageant will be
given for the benefit of the Con
federate Memorial Association
of the Pirst Presbyterian Church.
Chief among the features of the
ocasion will be the "bird" dance
with a flock of beautiful white
homing pigeons.
A med ley of shepherds and
she)herdesses, flowers. dances
and the May queen and her court
will contribute to the pleasure of
the afternoon. The shepherd
esses will be dressed in white
and( will wear wreathes of flow
er's; the shepherds will wear
white w it.h houtonn,iere of' green.
The most unique ''Stunt'' of the
fete will be the human flower
garden in which nearly five hun

will be seen growing.
Miss Lilly Currell has been
elected queen of' the Pageant.

A. last Wednesday Mr. Robert
Moorman, president of the Uni
versity Alumni Association, de
livered a short -but excellent ad
dress on "Christian Steward
ship." Mr. Moorman is at all
times interested in Carolina and
Carolina men, whether they be
on the athletic field, in the liter
ary societies, or in the Y. M. C. A.
He began by showing that we
are God's creatures His stew
ards, and that as His stewards
we owe it to Him as well as to
ourselves to make the most of
our talents. The parable of the
"Talents" was used to ilustrate
the absurdity of not developing
the gifts we have. no matter how
small and insignificant they seem.
"it is our duty as good stewards"
he said, "to develop our talents
to the fullest extent." "Yet
there are men present who could
play football but (lid not: there
are men present who could play
baseball but (lid not, basketball
but did not.''
