STUDENT BODY HEARS ADDRESS BY REV. WAY Speaks on Economic Side of World War "This war is going to be won by economy," said Rev. William Way in his address on prepared ness delivered before the student body at chapel. Rev. Way is a member of the South Carolina preparedness commission and is now making atourof the colleges of the state speaking on pre pared ness. The speaker went on to say that the man behind the plow in this great world crisis is more important than the man behind the gun. He showed the impor tance of aiding the Entente Al lies in this gloomy conflict while they are confronted with such a scarcity of food crops. "To do this,'' he continued, "the farm ers of our country will have to lay stress on production and econ omy.'' The speaker closed his remarks by urging the students to lend their influence wherever possible towards this noble cause. F. A. V. SPRING DANCE CROWNING AFFAIR, ETC. That social service should Le given careful consideration by any man choosing his life work was the contention of I)r. Albert S. Johnson of the State Board of Charities and Corrections in his address on "Socal Service as a Life Work" before the Y. M. C. A. "Social Service" said Dr. John son "is distinctly spiritual and religious for the salvation of society derends upon disclosing to the human soul its relation to God. Every man should decide upon his life work just as sincere ly and with - s much purpose as a missionary or minister decides upon his." The speaker divided social ser vice into two divisions; social service between individuals and social service by an"organization of individuals. Frierds hip he said is one of the most important channels of social service, es pecially individual social service, built by setting the example for his friend and by leaving the impress of his character upon him. I)r. Johnson called attt n tion the fact that organized social service opened a great field to the entrant, of which organized charity, play ground work and wvelfare work were the most conspicoius examples. "Social sevice wor' , ' he contint. ed, "appeals to the missionary spirit in people to help in the elimination of poverty, disease, vice and crime.
