Many Men Sign Pledges for
Bible Reading and
Christian Life
The series of addresses de
livered at the University of South
Carolina from the 5 to the 7 of
December by Dr. James 1. Vance,
pastor of the First Presbyterian
Church of Nashville, Tennessee,
were in every way a success.
Dr. Vance spoke six times.
lie made his first address to the
Law School, taking for his sub
ject: My Reasons for Believing
in Christ. Dr. Vance spoke
thereafter in the chapel upon the
following topics: A Young Man's
Way, Fear not Them that Kill
the Body, We should see Jesus,
Man and His Maker, Home and
the Far Country.
Large crowds came out to hear
him. At every meeting the
chapel was filled with eager lis
teners. His straight-forward,
direct manner of speaking was
liked by all.
One hundred and two men
signed pledges to form the hab
it of daily Bible-reading and
prayer. Ninety-six signed
the following pledge on the final
night: I accept Jesus Christ for
all that he is and all that he can
do for me and make it my pur
pose to live a Christian life.
Another Alumnus Farming
Mr. Sims Spigener, who grad
uated from the University in
1900 is now farming at Allen
dale and at the same time buy
ing cotton. His profits this year
have been as much as the salary
of a bank president.
After Mr. Spigener finished
the University he went into part
nership with his father on the
latter's place below Columbia;
but owing to constant floods and
continual loss of crops fpr several
years in succession, they moved
to another locality. Mr. Spig
ener spent some years at the
home which his father purchas
ed on Sumter Street immediately
in front of the campus.
Clariosophic Society
At the last meeting of the
South Carolina Inter-Collegiate
Association it was agreed that
law students, who had not receiv
ed a diploma from a college,
would be allowved to enter the
annual contest on equal terms
with other undergraduates.
Since the University of Geor
gia has withdrawn from the de
bating triangle another un ivers
ity is to be substituted. It will be
either theUn iversity of A labama
or the University of Florida but
more likely the University of
Alabama.
A definite proposal is soon to
be sent to Georgetown Unve
sity concerning the joint debate
which is under consideration. If
a satisfactory agreement can be
reached the debate will be held
at Washington sometime in
March.
Speaking in a purely literary
manner, as we big writers say,
in The Birth of a Nation there is
no dearth of situation.
