lMr. Beverly Herbert, a loyal
alumnus of the University of
South Carolina, addressed the Y.
M. C. A. at its regular meeting
Wednesday evening on the sub
ject of "The Broadening Influ
ence of a Christian." Mr. Her
bert began his address by citing
some passages from the Bi
ble, which he said we had heard
in our childhood days, but had
never given them any particu
lar thot. For instance, "Bless
ed are the pure in heart, for
they shall see God," and "Bless
ed are the meek, for they shall
inherit the earth."
The speaker continued his talk
by saying that it was the thot
upon such statements which tend
ed to broaden our Christian lives.
He said that a man who con form
ed his Christian life according to
these words was bound to have a
broader view of Christian fellow
2 ship and would be a source of
happiness and great influence to
those about him. While, on the
Vi~ other hand, such men as Mark
Ci' Antony and Nepolian Bonepart,
who worshipped the God of world
ly ambition, never contributed
C3 anything towards influencing the
s world to high'er ideals of life.
The speaker said that the in
fluence which counts is by men
not for worldly praise but for con
science's sake. He cited such
men as Mr. Gladstone and others
whose influence upon the world
was beyond comprehension. Mr.
Herbert concluded his inspiring
address by exhorting the men in
these words, "Be sure you live
the life you ought to for the sake
of those who are to follow you."
The Alumni Loan Fund.
The Alumni loan fund of thd
University has lent needy stu
dents more than $30,000, since
its beginning in 1904 according
to Professor Bradley's recent
bulletin. The fund began with
about $1000 in 1904 to $11,000 in
1916. This amount has been
paid but three times and collect
ed twice.
In addition to the $11,000 men
tioned above there are 12 honor
ary scholarships conferred at the
close of the session upo n such
students as are nominated in the
several deqartments. Among
these scholarships are: Harper,
Preston, McDuffie, Marion Sims,
Thornwell, Rion, Aiston, Legare,:
First Hampton, Hutchinson,Sec-;
ond Hampton and Manning. W.
S. Reamer of Columbia has en
dowed two scholarships of $150
each, to be conferred by the fac
ulty. The class of 1885 has es
tablished two scholarships, a
junior scholarship of $150 for
