Plunging Baack Elected Captain ,of Gamecock Eleven-Well Deserves Honor. Dick Kerr, one of the Carolina football stars, was elected cap tain of the football team for 1917 "DICK" KERR Star backfield man elected captain for coming season at a recent meeting of Advisory Board. at a meeting of the players last Friday. Captain Kerr has play ed on the varsity for three years, and was awarded his "C" last year, and won a star this season. Mr. Kerr is one of the best players Carolina has, and he has plenty of "pep" with it. The team elected a man who will make a good leader, as the out going captain, M. K. McMillan. At a meeting of the advisory committee the following men were awarded block C's: J. H. Moore, J. H. Boulware, B. M. Kilgore, Harry Horton, S. M. Clarke, James Crouch, Frank Simril, C. B. REJECTS ONE YEAR RUL[ Rule Less Stringent on Sum. mer Baseball. Prof. Coleman Representi University and Proposes Amendment. The Southern Inter-collegiatE Athletic association and thE Southern Ath,etic conferencE held their annual conventions ir Charleston Friday and SaturdaN as guests of the Citadel. Dele. gates from 25 of the 28 collegeE and universities in the Southerr Inter-collegiate Athletic associa tion were in attendance. ThE University was represented by Prof. J. Bruce Coleman. Dr. B. M. Walker, vice president of the Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College presided ovet the association; Prof. Thomas Bragg of the Alabama Polytech nic Institute, over the confer ence. The one year residential rule for college players was over whelmingly defeated in the S. 1. A. A. The substitute amend rnent providing that a student, to be eligible for the teams, must be a freshman with 14 Carnegie inits was also rejected. The president of the associa tion was empowered to appoint i commitee of 28 to classify the nstitutions in the S. 1. A. A. ind to report at the next annual ,eeting. A resolution was also passed requiring ten hours of recitations per week of all athletes. At its final session the South rn Athletic conference decided inamimously that in contests be bween members of the confer 3nce the one year rule be observ d, but in other games, freshmen may play, if desired. One of the most important pieces of constructive work per formed by the S. I. A. A. was -he passage of the following imendments: Part 1. A student after he has >een in college one full year and ias met the scholarship require nents of said institution for ath etic eligibility, may play sum ner baseball on any team he nay elect, provided said team is iot a member of a league operat ng under the terms of the so :alled national agreement. Part 2. A student who has not een in college one full year or ('ONWINUEDI ON PAOE SIX. CHRISTMAS GERMAN TO BE ELABORATE AFFAIR Will be Given December 20 at Jefferson Hotel. I University Quartet Will Furnish Song Hits While Schumacher's Orchestra Renders Music. The Christmas German will be on the twentieth of December at the Jefferson Hotel from nine until eleven o'clock. The dance will be conducted cabaret fashion in the dining room. The man agement states that the dance will be one of the most elaborate and aostly affairs of the season. Dinner will commence at nine. There will] be ten dances in the dining room. The couples will glide in and out among the tables. One of the features of this part of the entertainment will be the songs by the University quartet. Schumacher will furnish the mu sic. At eleven every one will proceed to the ballroom. Mr. Austin Parker and Miss Myra Roof will lead the grand march. Mr. Frank Sims and Miss Wilton of Rock Hill will lead the Ger man figure. Some of the visiting girls will be: Misses Margaret LMoore of Charleston, Willis Scoville of Orangeburg. Nell Jones of Edge field, Elizabeth Arthur of Union. Margaret Patterson of Hariwell. Sara McLaurin of Bennettsville. Myra Roof of Winnsboro. NO CLASS FOOTBALL FOR THIS SEASON The advisory board at its last meeting decided to abolish class foot ball at the University this season. This decision came as a result of the one year rule. The board i considered it useless to have both class foot ball and a fresh nan team. The freshman team serves the purpose for which class games were held as it brings out new material. The Uoard of Trustees of the University will hold their regu lar meeting Tuesday. Professor L. T. Baker spoke at a mneeting of Calhoun County Teachers at St. Matthews, Dec. 9th. Professor J. B. Coleman at tended a meeting of the S. I. A. A. at Charleston D)ecember 8th andl 9th. WOODY WILL MANAGE '17 FOOTBALL TEAM North Caroliona Boy Chosen By Board. Was Assistant Manager and Showed Managerial Ability. At a meeting of the advisory board last Thursday, Mr. .L H. Woody was elected manager of J. H. WOODY Chosen as manager of Gamecocks for 1917 seasn because of ability shown in past season as assistant maunger. the football team for next year. Mr. WKoody is a meniber of the junior class in the academic de partment of the University. He was an assistant football man ager this year and his work as an assistant is most commend able. In addition to his profi cient record in his studies, hie has taken an active part in al the phases of college life. lie has been an enthusiastic sup porter of the athletics of the Ini versity. and bids fair to manage the football affairs with marked success. LE FERVE COMES AS EXCHANGE PROFESSOR Albert Le Ferve, professor of Philosophy at the University of Virginia, has been named as ex change lecturer to the University of South Carolina. He will come sometime in the spring, the exact date not having been decided up on yet. Professor Lie Ferve is an enter taining and force ful speaker and one of the leading professors of the south. This University has con ferred uon)f him the degree of 144 1).t
