An Appeal
The Editor of the Gamecock
has received the following letter
for publication:
To the Editor of the Gamecock;
A young man came to this
University last year and cast his
lot with us. He only remained
with us something like three
months, for the dread disease of
tuberculosis had fastened its
ghastly grip upon him. He is
now a patient out at the State
Tuberculosis Camp, about eight
or ten miles from Columbia. But
in the little while that he was a
student here lie proved the metal
that he was made of. Slipping
out of the infirmary, unknown
to the physician or the nurse, he
entered into the preliminary for
the Roddey debate, and won a
place as one of the representa
tives from the Clariosophic socie
ty. Then as a sick man he won
the medal in the real contest
over some of the very best speak
ers that Carolina had. Students
and others who heard him con
ceded that this young man was
one of the best debaters that has
appeared at Carolina in recent
years. After the debate he went
back to the infirmary and has not
gotten better. To remain in the
Tuberculosis Camp requires mon
ey. He is being supported by
his sister who teaches school.
This sister is not only doing
that but helping her aged mother
also, and all from her meager
salary. Now, fellow Carolinians
can not we help him a little too?
If each man here would only
c ntribute 25 or 50 cents it would
pay his expenses there for
a few months at least. Are YOU
willing to do this? -1 believe
that you are.
We honor our football player,
which is a fine thing. We raised
money this year to send a com
mittee to interview and persuade
the father of one of our players
to allow his son to play. We
paid the expenses of one of our
coaches to Charlottesville, Va. to
the Virginia-Carolina game there.
That was also a rather nice
thing to have done. We have
also gIven money to pay for
flowers and ribbons and horses
and carriages for our spon
sors at our. Citadel-Carolina
Thanksgiving game. That too
was a mighty nice thing to have
(lone. Some of the students here
have made financial sacrifices in
order to help the war prisoners
in the European war camps.
That was a mighty commendable
thing to have done. But a young
man from our own midst needs
help as much as those prisoners
in Europe need help. In a sense
they placed themselves where
they now are. Our fellow stu
(lent did not volunteer to have

A Letter.
The following signed letter has
been submitted to the editor.
We will acknowledge that the
satire appearing in the Novem.
ber issue of The Carolinian en
titled "A Chapel Scene" and
signed by "Flip," from a liter.
ary point of view, has its merits.
If, however, it was written fror
purely a literary and humorous
point of view, why was there no
name signed to it? And if it
was written from any other point
of view it showed the pooresi
kind of taste and a depleted sort
of Carolina spirit.
We wiil not attempt to answer
all of the allegations, but of some
it is absolutely necessary.
There seems to be an insinu
ation from beginning to end that
the Co-eds are not given a voice
in student affairs. If this is true,
why? Inquiries fail to revea
that they have been asked to re
main away from the student body
meetings. Furthermore, our fel
low students of the law school
absolutely deny that Co-eds are
not perfectly welcomed at any
of their meetings. We are glad
to have in our midst this repre
sentation of our South Caroline
womanhood, but we deplore such
an attempt to create an agitation
and also believe that it is con
demned by a majority of the Co.
eds.
The worst feature, however,
we even hesitate to mention be
cause of its littleness. Anyone
who saw Carolina play football
this year knows that there was
never a cleaner te:un on any
gridiron. If we had had a win
ning tea) and an ou tsider had
accused us of playing (iirty foot
ball it would have been bad
enough. But after such a season
as the one we have just complet
ed, to have one of our own stu
dents make such an insinuation
is almo,t unbelievable. If the
charge had been in general we
might have made allowance for
"human frailties" and overlook
ed it, but to point'out an individ
ual, and one who served us well,
is too little to need further men
tion.
If the Co-eds think they are
not getting a "square deal" they
have only to appeal to the stu
dent body to get a hearing. We
have student self-government,
and our student body meeting
can be turnedl into a tribunal of
justice. We appreciate that we
all have our shortcomings be
cause we arec only human. Alst
many of us would be glad to be
told of them in order to try and
make amends. There is, how
ever, one request we would like
to make, do it to our- faces and
not under assumed names.
