BOLL WEEVIL IS SOUTH CAROLINA MENACE Subject of Interesting and In structive Lecture by Dr. Moore The last meeting of the Le Conte Scientific Society was ad dressed by Dr. A. C. Moore, who gave an account of the recent trip he took to Louisiana, Miss., and Alabama with the Boll Wee vil Commission appointed by Gov. Manning. Dr. Moore gave in his opinion that the Boll Weevil would be an important factor in the agricul ture of this state within the next two or three years. This opinion is based upon the history of the progress of the weevil which has moved already eastward since its entrance into Texas at the rate of 50 or more miles per year. There seems to be no reason, de -lared Dr. Moore,climatic or oth er, why the weevil should not continue its eastward course. It is now within 45 miles of the South Carolina line and it is not improbable that it may migrate across the Savannah River this fall. The speaker gave an interest account of the Commission which was met in New Orleans by Dr. Dodson of the Louisiana State University convoyed by him throughout that state. The Com mission investigated the econom ic conditions accompanying the advent of the weevil as well as the actual damage to the cotton in the fields. Each community visited gave about the same report, Viz, that no preparation was made be fore the roming of the Boll Wee vil and that when it did come it greatly reduced the production of cotton, demoralized credit, drove out a large proportion of labor, and caused serious depreciation of land values. After seven or eight years of depression the people of Louisi ana are just now beginning to get on their feet again by raising more hay, grain, cattle, and hogs and by applying im proved methods of culture to the reduced acreage which they plant. Dr. Moore urged that the peo pie of S. C. get ready for the weevil adopting a similar system of agriculture at once and stated that while the Boll Weevil would undoubtedly bring calamity with it, its effects would be lessened and p)ermanent recovery would be accelerated by intelligent pre paration before hand. The experience of the Boll Weevil in infested states shows that it is not a necessity to aban don the culture of cotton alto gether, but it can only be grown under improvedl methods and at greater cost than at present. Kerr "THE GAMECOCK" JOINS PRESS ASSOCIATION Last Saturday night the joint assembly of the Euphradian and Clariosophic societies accepted the invitation for THE GAMECOCK to join the South Carolina Col lege Press Association. Until this year the weeklies have not been members of the association and have had no or ganization whatever. This year, hovyever, all the weeklies of the State will be represented at the annual meeting of the associa tion, which will be held the lat ter part of this month in Green ville. The various editors will then have achance to get togeth er and discuss methods of editing a college weekly. Wrestling and Boxing. Prof. J. C. Blackburn,physical director, has organized a class in wrestling and boxing. This class meets in the gymnasium twice a week. Quite a number of the stu dents have taken advantage of this opportunity to receive expert instruction. There is *some very promising material so th'at Prof. Blackburn expects to develope several creditable boxers and wrestlers. He hopes to be able to arrange matches with the city Y. M.C.A. class which is being in structed by a professional wrest ler of the city. Prof. Black burn is one of the most scientific wrestlers of the state.
