OUR DEBUT
With this issue of THE GAME
COCK we, the new staff make
our initial appearance. It is
with a feeling of our incompeten
cy that we take up the pen.:
With the help, however, of the
student body, and with forgive
ness for our many errors, we
will do what we can to uphold
to some degree the high stand
ard of the best college weekly in
the State.
CHEERING
In the last Wofford Old Gold
and Black the Carolina student
body is complimented for the
hearty cheers given when Wof
ford made a good play in their
game with the Gamecocks.
Cheering has changed here from
the "babyish" ridiculing of our
opponents, and instead we have
University cheering. A good
play should be applauded
whether it is our team or not.
HATS OFF
Hats off to the freshmen! The
fighting spirit which they show
ed in the battle with the Clem
son first year men is worthy of
commendation. They soothed
in a great measure the sting of
Thursday's defeat and showed
the state what the future varsity
team may be.
They fought well from the
start, and though several times
defeat seemed likely they held
their ground with unabated
courage. Eleven men were not:
alone in their struggle. Behind,
them was the "pep" of the class
of 1920. This small group cheer
ed loudly at all stages of the
game, and gave inspiration to
the players, without which they
could never have conquered.
Hats off to the freshmen, our
future varsity team.
OUR CHANCE
Carolina has always been a
leader, and in every good cause
she is ready to do her share.
The fund now being collected:
for the relief of men in the
prison camps of Europe is one
the greatest opportunities ever
brought before the students of
America. It is a chance for col
lege men io do something for
people less fortunate than we.
By this small sacrifice we are
doing our part to lift humanity
to a higher plane, but greater
than this we are helping to save
our own great country from the
mighty grasp of selfishness, in
directly we are starting a move~
that will lead to the betterment
of America. We will show the
world that she is truly a Chris
tian nation.
Carolina is giving her share
and begs the other colleges of'
the state to join in this great;
