Just effected Carolina more than
Newberry.
That score of Tech vs. Cum

It make no di fference who wins
the world series we're goin' to
beat Wofford.
"THERE'S A REASON"
New ber'ry College brought its
football team or rather a foot
ball team down on last Saturday
and with a dr'ive that could not
be stopped befeated the Carolina
team 10 to 0. Newberry out
played us in every phase of the
game, and as far as playing was
concerned well deserved the ViC
tory. The showing of the team
from up north was somewhat
surprising to the supporters of
Carolina. But, as Mr. Kellogg
says, "there's a reason."
We have always prided our
selves on being game losers, and
if it were not a pet hobby of ours
to clean up athletics no mention
would be made of the affair last
Saturday, except an unbiased
write-up. We have every rea
son to be strong supporters of a
clean team, for no school ever
passed through a more success
ful year of unclean football than
we did last year. This we ad
mit, and don't deny that we are
ashamed of it. We are proud to
say, though, that we have cor
rected our errors and the team
we have this year is truly a Car
olina one and we challenge any
person or persons, in this State
or outside, to prove anything
otherwise.
Newberry is a real good c;l
lege, no doubt. We did not
know, though, that its reputation
was so wide-spread that it press
ed its irresistible attractiveness
as far north as Ohio. The strange
thing about it, too, is that these
applicants from far away are all
well seasoned football players.
As some one said, "They've
been playing football for some
time and are playing good yet."
We have not said that these
young men are "ringers," be
cause we don't know and have
not the time to investigate it,
but it does look funny, doesn't it?
When the instructors and
alumni of an institution stand on
an athletic field and brag with
great gusto on their team of
questionable eligibility, when
they admit that "There are five
ringers on the team, but no one
down South can prove it, for we
are too slick for you," it would
not take long for a reasonable
man to see that the team, if not
crooked, is unquestionably warp
ed.
Not long since we attended a
minstrel show and in the midst
of the performance one of the
players had an attack of epilepsy
and fell foremost off the stage.
The leading comedian in attempt
ing to rescue the audience said,
"'It's nuttin serious, ladies and
gemmen, jes ah lil stage fright."
Carolina has a good, honest foot
ball team and the defeat Satur
day was only the result of a lit
tie stage fright. She is coming
back and she is coming back
strong. When she has a chance
to give a show against an un
doubtedly clean team, our hopes
will rekindle. Our sympathy
goes out to those who must meet
the Lutherans.
