THOSE CONTESTS
One of the judges in deliver
ing the decision for one of the
society contests the other night
took the pains to remark about
the conspicious absence of the
student body at the contest.
Now this is a thorn in the side:
of every man connected with
the societies. What contestants
are trying to get in these con
tests is ease and power in speech
and this they cannot do without
a suffIciently large audience to
see.
One of the more ancient stu
dents on the campus told us that
he remembers the time when!
the halls could not occomodate
the crowds who attended the
intra-contests. Just what is the
cause of the inattention this
year we cannot say. Of course
its too late to do anything about
it this year, but let's remember
next year to take in a good thing
when we can.
I ''
As this is the last issue of THE
GAMECOCK we have intentionally
delayed the publication of this
edition in order to write up some
important events which should
b)e recorded. We promise you'
that we shan't do this again this:
year, for
This is our last attempt for
the year, and with it we wish
you a fond farewell. The year
has been a long one, as collegi
years not infrequently are, bu
it certainly has been a succees
ful and eminently enjoyable one
Those who have been here fo:
several years have noted wit]
pleasure the. revival of the ol(
time "pep" and enthusiasm a:
contrasted with the lack of col
lege spirit the two years before
May joy and peace go witl
you all wherever you may so
journ-whether to the enchant
ing work of harp selling; to th4
wheatfieldb of Minnesota; or t<
the powder works of Virginia
may your paths be paths ol
beauty and your ways be ways ol
peace.
Then to the seniors, who de.
serve special mention-don'1
forget us when you go away
but remember we still think ol
you and, "Absence makes the
heart grow fonder."
To A. E.Merrimon
Out of the deep of night
A distant arch of light,
Lofty and lornly bright,
From heaven's immeasurable
galaxy
Doth shoot an aureate star,
rhat trembles faintly far
Dn heaven's utmost bar,
Swift sinks into the shadowing
sea.
Dut of the weary womb
k life doth largely loom
And then the swarded tomb!
Companion of the dark and
groping worm.
Dut of the darker deep
A life doth slowly creep
And then a silent sleep!
One with the dust-a crumb
ling form!
[n wild and wailing mood
Doth move the multitude
)f men in earth's prelude
3ad broken music of eternity!
A breath upon the deep,
Lost in the ears they weep,
A sail on death's vast deep,
Launched forth upon the shore
less sea.
)ut of the deep we come
And pass in labor dumb,
[s this the utmost sum?
Hath life no ultimate goal of
higher good?
But, ah, eternity
Doth mark a larger lea
Beside a vaster sea
A loftier life of chastened
blood.
As in gray grief I grope
rhere breathes a higher hope
rhat dawns in broadening scope,
And bids my heavy sorrow
pass and cease:
)ut of mine earthly woe
B~ternal love shall flow,
A greater wisdom grow,
Wrought unto balm of perfect
peace.
