IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE IN GYM Whole Building to be Renovated and New Baths Installed. Improvements will soon begin to be made in the University gymnasium. Work will proba bly be started before commence ment. The gymnasium will be much more sanitary and up to date for next year than at pres ent. New and sanitary walls will be added to the showers and all the baths will be worked over so that they will give no trouble. It is also expected that the entire ground floor will be made of concrete which will be much more satisfactory than the old wooden one. More and better apparatus is to be installed on the main floor of the building, and there will be better facilities for dances and other entertainments than there are at present. The authorities hope to install a kitchenette that w ill be a great convenience in the preparation of refreshments T. J. LIPSCOMB OF CAM DEN ATTEMPTS SUICIDE Well Known Alumnus Inflicts Serious Wound. The many friends of Mr. Thos. J. Lipscomb were greatly shock ed last Friday when it was learn ed that he had shot and proba bly fatally wounded himself at his home in Camden, the pre vious day. Mr. Lipscomb, who is about 37 years old, was born and educated in Columbia, having attended the University. He had been a suf ferer for some time with nervous dyspepsia and this is the only reason known to his friends why he should have committed the deed. He was brought to Co lumbia on Saturday for treat ment and is expected to recover. Flinn Hall Being Painted. Work is now being done on Flinn Hall, the University Y. M. C. A. building. The woodwork is being painted and various other improvements are in the process of being made. The building was very much in need of these improvements as the old condition was not pleasing or inviting. The build ing has been dedicated to the freshman class by painting the front columns a dark green. Last Game of Season. The baseball team leaves Thursd'ay for Spartanburg where they play the last game of the season with Wofford. Carolina defated them on Davis Field on A pril 15, 8 to 0. The team has won seven games and lost thirteen with a percent age of 350. COLUMBIA BIRD CLUB ORGANIZES (CONTINUED FROM I.UE ONE.) masque in company with several others. The meeting was called to order by Miss Williams, presi dent of the State Audubon society. A short constitution, similar to that of the Audubon society was adopted. The ob ject of the club as expressed in the constitution is for the study and protection of our American birds. Then the election of per manent officers took place. Dr. A. C. Moore was chosen presi dent; Mr. Taylor, vice-president; .Miss Carr, secretary, and Miss Catharine Love, treasurer. It is hoped that the University students will take an active in terest in this organization and that a large number will be en rolled as members. The Uni versity should naturally be the head of such an organization and it will do the ktudents much good to study birds and become acquainted with the world of nature.
