THE CAMPUS BUILDS CHARACTER
A professor in a Southern in
stitution -said -recently that de3
pite the prqvious surmises, in
his opinion the most critical
time'in any mafi's life is between
17 and 22, the period at which
thosewho.-are so fortunate are
attending college. But it does
not take a prfesisor or prophet
to say this and get off with it.
Nothing is more conspicious to
an unbiased observer than the
latitude of college men. There
are factors alive and moving
over every college campus, that
represent practically every type
of the human "race, from the
maliciously . mischievous to the
grandest type of young man.
Carolina is .no exception to the:
principle.
It takes a man to go thru col
lege and not be affected by the!
disparaging conditions which
sarround him. It is indeed
gratifying to . note the general
high standard of morals that ex
ist on the campus this year. - In
a conversation recently, a gentle
man living in the neighborhood
of the University said that never
during the twenty years in which
he has been associated with the
University has there been a more
gentlemanly, more highly moral
crowd of young men attending
this college than at the present
time- Just to what this is due
cannot be attributed to one sin
gle factor, but it is evident that
general conditions are greatly
improved. Maybe it is due to
the excellence of our faculty,
maybe to the fact that the world
after all is getting better.
The fact remains tho that the
young men of this State are
reaching a point where they can
master their own fates and cap-i
tain their own souls. The cam
pus is getting to be a breeding
place personality, and after all'
this is the leading factor in solv
ing the problems of life. To beli
sure it cannot change the inheri
tance of nature, but can turn thatil
into some account. It cannot
change your five feet eleven into-I
six feet but it can make everyi
inch of you- an inch of man.'
Whether aoman be, richly en-,
dowed or' moderately -talented,
his -success will- depend on the
uses. he- makes of 'the. faculties
God.has given him. The-cam
pus is an infant world;' a facsi
mile 'of that 'which will -follow.
